Bhubaneswar, July 9 (LocalWire): None of the tourist destinations of Odisha has made it to the Centre’s list of 17 iconic spots for refurbishment into world-class tourist destinations.
The ruling BJD dubbed it as yet another case of Central neglect towards the eastern state.
The Centre plans to develop 17 tourism sites into world class tourist destinations and the Union budget presented last week mentioned these iconic sites.
In her speech, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said the government is developing 17 iconic tourism sites into world class tourist destinations to serve as a model for other tourism sites.
‘The world famous Konark Sun Temple and the pilgrim town of Puri, home to Lord Jagannath, deserved inclusion in the list of iconic tourism sites.
But its unfortunate that the Centre has left out these prominent tourism sites which attract lakhs of international and domestic tourists every year.
The state government will take it up with the Union government,’ said the minister for schools and mass education department, Samir Ranjan Dash.
The minister for tourism and culture Jyotiprakash Panigrahi toed the same line.
‘People of Odisha feel let down. BJP national president Amit Shah while releasing the party’s election manifesto during the general elections had pledged that the pilgrim town of Puri would be converted into the country’s cultural capital.
But promises are made only to be broken if the Central government’s stand is anything to go by,’ rued a resident of Puri town, Rakhal Mohapatra.
