Bhubaneswar, December 9 (LocalWire):The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) extended its support to the citizenship amendment bill introduced today in the Lok Sabha and passed with majority votes.
All the 12 lawmakers from the state’s ruling party voted in favour of the bill in the lower house.
After the bill was referred to Joint Parliamentary Committee, our party had suggested three proposals including protecting the larger interest of northeastern States from the impact of the law during the draft proposal of the bill, a senior BJD leader said.
Two of our proposals were accepted by the committee, BJD Parliamentary Party leader Bhatruhari Mahtab said adding that the support was extended to the introduction of the bill as per the unanimous decision of party high command.
Though the BJD and BJP fought a high voltage poll battle with acrimonious war of words during 2019 twin polls, BJD continues to be on friendly terms with BJP-led central government.
The regional party had lent supporting hand to BJP in the passing of several important bills, including the Triple Talaq Bill, in the Rajya Sabha.
