Berhampur, March 7 (LocalWire): The Ganjam district unit of the BJD today brought up the issue of the shelved railway wagon factory at Sitalapalli and the neglect meted out to the southern Odisha districts by the Centre, countering the accusations made by the minister of state for railways, Manoj Sinha, at a public rally near Gopalpur, last week.
In a run up to the twin elections, the district unit president and MLA (Gopalpur), Pradeep Kumar Panigrahy, complained, ‘The UPA government had sanctioned the construction of the railway wagon factory at Sitalapalli in 2011-12 and allotted 101-acres of land but the present government cancelled it.’
He criticised the Centre for not declaring Berhampur Railway Station as a model station.
The former minister also said, ‘The Centre didn’t consider the long-standing demands of the people of Ganjam for direct trains to Berhampur and New Delhi, Mumbai and Surat, and also a Berhampure -Puri memo train.’
Last week in a public rally, minister of state for railways, Manoj Sinha, claimed the Centre’s investment in the railway sector for Odisha had increased in the last five years than the previous government.
Sinha also criticised the state government for delay in the land acquisition process that inadvertently delayed the completion of the railway projects on time.
Panigrahy also added that the construction of the much-awaited railway lines from Berhampur-Phulbani, Gopalpur-Rayagada, Berhampur-Talcher and Berhampur-Sambalapur was yet to begin.
‘The tribal dominated Kandhamal district is yet to have a railway line, even after 72 years of Independence,’ he said.
