Berhampur, April 5 (localWire): The specially-designed bus that Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik used to launch his election campaign from Ganjam district on Wednesday was a major attraction for the people.
The bus, fitted with air conditioner, reclining lifts, comfortable sofas, private bedrooms and high-tech toilets with sophisticated interior was a hit during the road show in Berhampur by the BJD supremo.
The reclining lift is also a makeshift stage, with a height of about five-feet, from where the BJD president addressed the people.
The vehicle has glass fitting which allowed the people to see the CM while he was in the vehicle during the road show.
During the road-show he waved hands from inside the vehicle and addressed the public from the makeshift stage of the bus in several places in Berhampur.
Patnaik plans to cover major Assembly constituencies through this special-designed luxury bus. Besides beating the heat, which is around 40 degree celsius in different parts of the state, the vehicle will also help to reach out the people from up close, said a BJD leader.
‘There is no need to construct stages or to make makeshift helipads for the chief minister’s chopper,’ he said. He, however, did not give out the cost details.
The vehicle sports pictures of BJD supremo and the conch, the symbol of the BJD and the Hockey World Cup, held at Bhubaneswar.
A poll observer said these types of buses are very much in demand in the southern states during elections.
‘The leaders, in order to be in close proximity with the electorate, prefer such type of vehicles during the election,’ said Jayant Kumar Mohapatra, a former professor, Berhampur University.
In 1990s, the former chief minister Biju Patnaik rode his non air-conditioned Kalinga Rath, a specially designed vehicle, to reach out to the people during the election period, he said.
