Balangir, jan 13 (LocalWire): The BJP district unit today protested at the Collectorate here and submitted a memorandum to the Collector after the government suddenly stopped buying paddy from the farmers.
They also complained of shortcomings of the Primary Agricultural Cooperative Society (PACS) and complained of lack of adequate infrastructure to purchase paddy, irregularities in issuing token to farmers at the state level and to check the deduction of five kg per bag for Fair Average Quality (FAQ).
Last year the government had purchased 65 lakh metric tonnes of paddy from the farmers although 17districts of Odisha were reeling under a severe drought.
But the government this year has decided to purchase only 55 lakh metric tonnes of paddy from the farmers.
Bolangir district was given a target of 19 lakh metric tonnes which was achieved by late December and farmers are now stranded with harvested paddy, the BJP district unit President Sibaji Mohanty, alleged.
‘We demand improvement in the infrastructure of PACS.
We have reports that Balangir has been allocated an additional seven lakh metric tonnes of paddy procurement target but the administration is issuing PACS arbitrarily. We demand an inquiry.
Contrary to the High Court order some millers are also purchasing paddy from farmers,’ Mohanty said.
In a related development, Loisingha MLA Mukesh Mahaling, BJP leader Pradeep Purohit, and others demonstrated atop a tractor loaded with paddy before the Collectorate here, protesting against the deduction of five to seven kilograms of paddy from the farmers at PACS level.
Farmers of Nagaon (B) and Bidighat led by President of Zilla Krushak Mahasangh Sudhir Parischha also demonstrated before Civil Supplies Office here demanding purchase of paddy and complained of irregularities at the PACS level which is forcing farmers to go for distress sale.
