Berhampur, April 19 (LocalWire): The BJP candidate of Sorada Assembly segment under Aska Parliamentary constituency was arrested on Thursday night for allegedly damaging the EVM in a polling booth while voting was underway for the second phase of elections.
Nilamani Bisoi along with some of his supporters entered booth No 182 at Renti village about one hour before the closing time and destroyed the machine and also disrupted the polling process, police said.
At the time of the incident, 414 out of 539 voters had exercised their franchise, police added.
He was arrested under different sections of the Indian Penal Code and forwarded to the sub-jail, Sorada after his bail plea was rejected by the court.
The candidate was arrested following the complaints of the presiding officer of the booth PK Jena, said SDPO Aska, Suryamani Pradhan.
His brother Basant Kumar Bisoi although denied the allegations and said BJD supporters had damaged the EVM.
Nilamani also lodged a complaint in this regard to the police but his FIR was not registered.
