Berhampur, April 4 (LocalWire): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has nominated television actress Pinky Pradhan from Digapahandi assembly seat which will go to polls in the first phase of elections on April 11.
Pradhan will fight against BJD veteran and food supply minister Surya Narayan Patro from the agrarian constituency which has been shimmering with resentment over lack of irrigation facilities.
“We will highlight the farmers’ plight in the election. The constituency has been neglected in all fronts from irrigation, drinking water to industry,” said Pradhan.
Patro, on the other hand, has been elected to the state assembly six times in a row and would be a tough opponent for her. He was elected four times from Mohana and two times from Digapahandi.
Rejecting her claims, Patro said: “We have already taken up the Chheligada and Ghatakeswar irrigation projects, which are in different stages of development.”
“We have also taken up projects for supply of drinking water from river due the depletion of ground water in the blocks,” said Patro.
Congress has nominated first-timer Prafulla Panda, the former chairperson of Digapahandi NAC, from the seat.
Political analysts said that although the constituency has been marred with problems, the ruling party has a brighter chance in the elections due to the dissidents in BJP and desertion of leaders from Congress.
