Berhampur, Dec 22 (LocalWire) As Kandhamal shivered with a cold wave sweeping the tribal dominated district, the administration has distributed blankets to hostel inmates and changed school timings from morning to day.
Over the last few days, the minimum temperature is hovering between 7 to 9 degree Celsius at different places.
“Taking a note of the cold weather conditions, the district administration has ordered to hold classes during the daytime, instead of morning hours,” said Kandhamal district education officer (DEO) Bikash Pradhan.
“We will ensure all schools, including public ones, follow the order strictly,” he said.
Meanwhile, winter holidays of schools will start from Sunday.
“The order will be enforced till further notice,” he said.
Meanwhile, the district administration has distributed around 15,000 blankets to students housed at hostels of tribal development department.
“As we had distributed round 20,000 blankets to students staying for two years, and warm cloths to the newly enrolled students,” said district welfare officer (DWO) Charulata Mallick.
Around 39,800 students are housed in hostels of tribal development and mass education departments in the district, she said
“We think all hostel boarders have at least one blanket,” said the DWO.
The district continued to be the coldest place in the state with minimum temperature of 7 degree Celsius at Phulbani on Saturday, while hill town Daringibadi shivered at 8 degrees.
Cold wave blowing from the north and northwest side and snow-fall in Himanchal Pradesh are some of the reasons for dipping of the mercury level at several places in Odisha, including Kandhamal.
The night temperature is likely to go down further as the atmosphere is very
clean at present, said experts.
