Bhubaneswar, Dec 18 (LocalWire): The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) authorities have decided to rope in transgenders as recovery agents to enforce and recover holding tax and trade license from defaulters in the city.
BMC today signed an agreement with Swikriti, a Self Help Group comprising 10 transgender members living in a slum in Kalinga studio area of the city.
‘The plan is to rehabilitate members of the third gender who are socially neglected and are bereft of permanent income sources,’ said BMC Deputy Commissioner Srimanta Mishra.
‘This initiative by the BMC to seek the service of transgenders is bound to empower the third gender,’ said Meghana Sahoo.
Private and government sectors should take a cue from BMC who are providing jobs to transgenders who are still struggling for survival, Sahoo added.
