Paradip, Jan 7 (LocalWire) Senior leader Bijay Mohapatra on Monday was all praises for a teenager for her rescue operation during Mahanadi boat tragedy, despite being one of the victims herself.
The 15-year-old girl of Hasina village was also given a cash reward of Rs 5000 on Monday.
Subhasmita Sahoo, who is studying plus two commerce at Kujang College, went for a picnic at Hukitula Batighar with her family members on the occasion of New Year.
Her mother Laxmipriya Sahoo, her sister and three nieces and others villagers of Hasina returned to their village by crossing Mahanadi river near Hukitila. Due to overcrowding, the boat turned turtle mid-river and 55 villagers were drowned.
Subhasmita’s neck was trapped in a piece of wood of the said boat.
“After struggling a lot, I could release my neck from the trap of wood and rescue myself because I knew underwater swimming,” said Subhasmita.
When she heard cries for help, Subhasmita rescued nearly 12 children and brought them to safety.
On Saturday, Mohapatra visited the village to express his grief on the death of ten people, including eight children and two women.
During this time, he came to know about Subhasmita’s exemplary courage.
“Her heroic act was ignored by the administration and others. Though, she is the actual hero of rescue operations, it is unfortunate nobody acknowledged her,” said the politician.
On Monday, he sent Rs 5000 towards cash prize in favour of Subhasmita.
His supporters, social activist Satya Prakash Mohanty, Bipin Kumar Tripathy and Prasan Kumar Mohanty felicitated Subhasmita and gave Rs 5000 to her on behalf of Mohapatra for her bravery.
