Bhubaneswar, April 19 (LocalWire): A father-daughter duo has launched a guidebook on different species of birds found in Odisha. Titled “Birds of Odisha – a pictorial encyclopedia”, the book contains the scientific, local and biological names of 316 species of birds and their preferred natural habitats.
“It’s a complete source of information on birds of Odisha. The book will immensely help conservationists, birdwatchers, photographers and natural science students,” said co-author Pramod Dhal.
The book published by Dhara Sreeradha Trust was launched on March 7 at Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra Odissi Research Centre here. A copy of the book was also presented to Odisha Governor Ganeshi Lal.
The 720-page book contains 1,000 pictures of rare birds found in Odisha.
Dhal had been working on the book along with his daughter Gloria since 2011.
“My interest in birds grew during my childhood days in my Argal village in Kendrapara. I have spent a lot of time in the midst of nature,” said Dhal, who’s a senior GST and Customs officer.
Dhal, an acclaimed wildlife photographer, had worked with the NGO Wild Odisha for bird surveys in Chilika Lake, Bhitarkanika, Mahandi and Chandaka.
This is not his first attempt at spreading public awareness about avian fauna in Odisha.
In 2014, he held his first exhibition on birds at Odisha Modern Art Gallery. He also showcased his work at an exhibition at the Constitution Club in Delhi which was attended by former Union minister L.K. Advani.
His works are also published on National Geographic magazine.
Some of the common birds found in Odisha include Asian Koel, Common Mynah, Asian Pied Starling, Black headed Oriole and White-breasted Kingfisher.
