Kendrapara, Dec 13 (LocalWire) The Indian Council for Child Welfare (ICCW) has recently selected 15 -year-old Dalit boy Situ Mallick of Kandira village within Bhitarkanika National Park in Kendrapara district for the prestigious National Bravery Award 2018.
The award will be given on Republic Day in New Delhi for his act of bravery.
“The National Bravery Award medal will be handed over to Situ on Republic Day function in New Delhi by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to recognize his gallantry in saving the life of his 44 year old uncle from the jaws of a salt-water crocodile from the crocodile infested river on 19th February 2018,” said Kendrapada district collector Dasarathi Satapathy.
“The district administration had earlier recommended his name to the government for national and state bravery award. This award will inspire other people to save others by risking their lives,” he said.
Situ and his uncle Binod were fording a small creek of Patasala river on Feb 19 evening to guard ripe paddy from spotted deer and wild boars on their agricultural land when a crocodile suddenly emerged out of the knee-length water, clamping its vice-like jaws and trying to drag Binod into the deep water. But Situ fought bravely with the reptile to save his uncle’s life.
He attacked the reptile with a torch and bamboo stick due to which the crocodile lost its grip and failed to drag Binod into the deep water .
The mangrove covered Kandia village is celebrating Situ’s achievement ever since the district administration announced the news on Wednesday.
“We will go to New Delhi along with Situ to attend the bravery award function in New Delhi,” said his father Meghanada.
“I am delighted to know that Situ, a student of our school will get the bravery award for saving the life of his uncle,” said Maheswar Rout, headmaster of Basudev High School at Kandira village.
Situ is a class X student of this school.
It may be recalled, Mamata Dalei, an eight year old girl of Bankuala village within the Bhitarkanika National Park got national bravery award from the Prime Minister in 2018 for saving the life of another village girl Asanti.
