Jagatsinghpur, Nov 10 (LocalWire): This year farmers cultivating paddy in 86,220 hectares of land in Jagatsinghpur district have been riddled with problems.
Seeds germinated late after those procured from Odisha Seed Supply Corporation and state government proved substandard, deficit rainfall delayed the cultivation and now standing crops were flattened by lashing rains induced by Cyclone Bulbul.
Khetra Mohan Behera hailing from Redhua under Raghunathpur block said ‘the rainfall and storm is worrying as production is likely to fall and even the quality of produce is sure to be affected.’
Farmers are afraid the quality of the crop will suffer and hope the state government will relax procurement norms besides providing them compensation.
Deputy director, Agriculture, Rabi Narayan Mohapatra said, ‘the damage to paddy has not yet been ascertained and our team will conduct a survey to assess the losses.’
