Berhampur, Dec 22 (LocalWire): Senior BJP leader and Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan today claimed the Citizenship (Amendment) Act which was passed in the Parliament, was aimed to protect refugees who had taken shelter in the country.
The CAA will not take away anyone’s citizenship, rather it will help minorities facing religious persecution in neighbouring countries like Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh, the minister told reporters here.
The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) will provide Indian nationality to six communities – Hindus, Christians, Sikhs, Parsis, Jains and Buddhists who had to take refuge in India (on or before 31 December 2014) fleeing from persecution in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh, three Islamic countries.
Pradhan was here to attend the annual function of Saraswati Sishu Vidyamandira, Nilakantha Nagar.
Commenting on the country-wide outrage over CAA, Pradhan said Opposition political parties, particularly the Congress, was misleading the people on the citizenship Act and instigating them to resort to violence.
‘They should restrain from such violence and not spread fear among minorities by misleading them about the Act,’ he said.
Commenting on the National Register of Citizens and referring to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s stand against it, the Union minister said it needs to be implemented and the Centre will frame it for the entire country.
