Berhampur, Jan 10 (LocalWire): Attacking the Opposition for creating furore over the Citizenship Amendment Act (CCA), Union minister Babul Supriyo today said they are spreading ‘false propaganda’ and creating anarchy.
‘The CAA, passed in the last session of the Parliament, is meant to provide citizenship to minorities and not take it away,’ Union minister of state for environment and forest, while addressing a pro-CAA rally organized by the BJP’s Ganjam district unit, said.
He said the Congress, Trinamul Congress (TMC) and the Left parties are only misleading people on the Act. He also targeted Rahul Gandhi and said although the Gandhi scion had apologized for lying during the general elections, he is once again repeating his mistakes.
He said CAA will not affect the minority communities but will give citizenship to those who have taken shelter from the three neighbouring Islamic countries in a dignified manner.
He said former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in 2005 had also advocated for citizenship to Bangladeshis, who came to India.
The Union minister said both Indira Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru had considered providing citizenship to people fleeing their countries after facing religious persecution. ‘Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken a bold step to protect the neglected people,’ Babul said.
BJP’s vice president Baijayant Panda said Prime Minister Narendra Modi was following the footsteps of Mahatma Gandhi by providing citizenship to minorities and criticized the Opposition for offering sops to those involved in violence.
