Berhampur, March 22 (LocalWire): Holi, a spring festival came at the advent of summer this year to everyone’s chagrin.
But for the candidates whose names have been recently announced by the political parties in Ganjam district, this came as a boon.
They used the festival in their favour as a ‘reach-out-exercise’ and celebrated it with their electorate on Friday.
Several candidates and their supporters used green and saffron abir (coloured powder), indicating the political battle between Biju Janata Dal and Bharatiya Janata Party.
Traders said demand for green and saffron coloured abir was more than red this year.
The BJP party office was decked up where the party’s Lok Sabha candidate Bhrugu Boxipatra, district president Kanhu Charana Pati and several other leaders were present to greet the people.
BJD party workers visited the residence of the party candidate from Berhampur Lok Sabha.
‘I met the people who smeared me with colour. Its best way to reach out to them,’ said Chandra Sekhar Sahu, before leaving for Paralakhemundi, one of the Aassembly segments in Berhampur constituency for electioneering.
Pramila Bisoi, the BJD’s Aska Lok Sabha seat candidate was also not one to shy away from festivities. Hundreds of women self group members gathered at her residence at Cheramaria to play Holi with the 68-year old.
The Congress Lok Sabha candidate from Berhampur, V Chandra Sekhar Naidu, took part in Holi celebrations with party members.
‘We celebrated the festival irrespective of party affiliation,’ said Sibaram Patra, a youth Congress leader here.
In several other areas, candidates of various political parties also played Holi by going door-to-door and smearing people with coloured powder.
