Bhubaneswar, September 01 (LocalWire): A specialized team of Laparoscopic and Bariatric Surgeons at CARE Hospital successfully conducted a rare bariatric surgery on a 36-year-old patient today.
Jagdish Sahoo, weighing 168.2 Kg, visited the hospital with severe respiratory difficulty, not being able to climb the stairs or walk for some distance due to his body weight.
According to the patient, “he was unable to do his day–to-day activities without getting tired.
He was also suffering from hypertension, hypothyroidism, diabetes and severe OSA.
Taking a multidisciplinary approach, the patient was initially put under a monitored diet and exercise, started anti-hypertensive and thyroid meditation.
After a month of supervision, the patient was taken up for Lap One Anastomosis Gastric Bypass surgery under Dr. Tapas Mishra, Head, Bariatric Surgery, CARE Hospitals, Bhubaneswar and was discharged three days later.
A Bariatric surgery is a done through 3-4 small 5-10 mm abdominal incision on the stomach and/or intestines to help a person with extreme obesity lose weight and get relief from associated comorbidities.
In India, more than 135 million Indians are affected by obesity according to a study by NCBI in 2019.
Speaking after the surgery, Dr. Tapas Mishra, Head of Bariatric Surgery, CARE Hospitals, Bhubaneswar said, “The procedure has benefits such as significant weight loss, improvement/ control of long term diabetes, improvement of BP and hypercholesterolemia resulting in stopping or reducing the dose of medication and relief from sleep apnea, snoring apart from better mood, self-esteem and quality of life.”
The patient, Jagdish P Sahoo, speaking on his weight loss journey said, “I can now easily walk and cycle 4-5 km which felt like a distant dream a few months back.

He has now lost 41 kg, is off anti-hypertensive and diabetic medications and his thyroid medication has decreased to one fourth of the prescribed dose.
