Balasore, June 11 (LocalWire): Nilagiri police today registered a case against 8 persons along with 30 others who were involved in illegal sand mining in the river bed of Suno near Pundala village.
Minati Biswal, the Inspector-In-Charge of Nilagiri police station, said that the sub-collector, Tehsildar and the police conducted a raid on Wednesday night on being informed about the illegal sand mining that was being carried out on the river bed of Suno.
When the officials reached the spot, the illegal practice was going on, in which case, a loader and dumper were seized by the police.
Recently, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) had ordered the Odisha Government to inspect illegal sand mining that usually takes place in the river bed of Subarnarekha, violating severe environmental and mining laws.
The NGT had also ordered the Government to constitute a Committee comprising the collector of Balasore, the State Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA), the Odisha Pollution Control Board (SPCB) and the Regional Office of the Environment Ministry.
The NGT cited that the constituted committee will jointly inspect the spot within 15 days and meet applicants and report their grievances and take necessary action against the persons that were practicing the illegal sand mining.
