Bhubaneswar, December 14 (LocalWire): In an initiative to curb the poaching of pangolins, authorities of Athgarh forest division in Cuttack district have decided to reward those providing information on cases of smuggling and poaching of these protected and endangered wildlife.
Any form of dissemination of information on poaching and smuggling activities will be rewarded with Rs 10,000 cash incentives, divisional forest officer Sasmita Lenka said.
The identity of informers will be kept confidential, she added.
The rise in case of poaching and smuggling of pangolins accorded protection under schedule-1 wildlife protection act, has become a cause of worry.
The anti-poaching squads will be further strengthened from ground-zero information by local people, she said.
Two pangolin smuggling cases were busted in the current month in Athgarh forest division and 16 people have been so far arrested in both the cases.
The smugglers had taken the online route to smuggle out the pangolins.
The specialized investigation of the case is being done by the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) presently, she added.
The arrested persons were using code names though the internet for delivering the wildlife items to escape detection, she concluded.
