Freshwater pearl culture supplements farmers income in Baliapal

December 3, 2019 By Sibdas Kundu Leave a Comment

Balasore, December 3 (LocalWire): For the farmers stretched for means to increase their earnings, freshwater pearl culture is proving to be a boon to the agrarian community in Balasore district.

According to locals, since freshwater pearl yields over three times more profit margins a lot of farmers are evincing interest in the culture process, particularly in Baliapal block in the district.

However, the farmers allege that there is no financial encouragement either from the state or the central government to support this initiative, although there is a demand for it.

Agrees district fisheries officer Rabinarayan Pattnayak: “There is no scheme to promote freshwater pearl culture under the fisheries department yet. It is under the Agriculture Promotion and Investment Corporation of Odisha Ltd (APICOL).”

Pattnayak further informed that the process is known as image pearl culture while the actual freshwater culture is done mainly in the southeastern Asian countries, which is not possible in this climatic condition.

A prominent pearl-culture farmer, Arun Pal said that though there are provisions for loans and subsidy under the APICOL scheme, the criterion to get the support is very stringent and makes it difficult for farmers to avail of this facility. “Overall, there may be around 20 farmers who have taken up this,” he stated.

A man with over 14 years experience in pearl culture, Pal explained that the total cost till the harvest, including mussel, feed, and cage comes to around Rs 30 per mussel and it gets sold at least Rs 100.

“One can earn around Rs three lakh by investing Rs one lakh in this. The Harvest period is a maximum of one year. However, it is important that the mussel should be at least three years old before hatching and should be of the required size and weight before undertaking culture,” Pal said.

Cultured pearls are real pearls that were not formed by accident of nature. Most pearls sold today are cultured since edible oysters do not produce nacre and thus do not produce pearls.

Backyard gardens help meet nutrition security needs (Special)

November 30, 2019 By Sudhir Mishra Leave a Comment

Balangir, November 30 (LocalWire): Almost every house in a village in Odisha has a backyard, which is either kept as an open space or used as an animal shed, while few others plant locally available vegetables and greens for their own consumption.

Experts point out that the backyard is an excellent space for setting up kitchen gardens to enhance the nutrition security of villagers, enabling them to have fresh homegrown vegetables for a healthy life, and also some economic benefit.

This is where Reliance Foundation has been playing a key role, facilitating the community in Balangir to set up a nutrition garden and provide irrigation facilities as per the requirement.

The foundation has been enabling the villagers in the area to adopt the Reliance Nutrition Garden (RNG) model, which includes a round-shaped spread over 710 sq ft of area.

There are two circles with seven beds in each circle and there is an innermost pit that is used to develop compost.

According to Sushant Das of Reliance Foundation in Balangir, “The main idea of a round shaped RNG is to get at least 14 types of vegetables round the year and make the habit of vegetable consumption by the community to reduce the nutrition deficiencies.”

The nutritional garden allows villagers to grow different locally available vegetables like tomato, brinjal, cauliflower, cabbages, coriander, lemon, reddish, cucumber, bitter gourd, reddish, onion, and garlic.

One can also cultivate pudina moringa and papaya, and since these are grown in the backyards, a villager can have access to fresh vegetables throughout the year, Das stated.

Experience of farmers

Fifty-eight years old Bedamati Meher of village Barla, in Gudvella block of Balangir, who had set up the RNG six years ago, is a happy beneficiary.

“We have cultivated tomato, cabbage, cauliflower, brinjal and bitter gourd, radish, chilly, and onion. In the first ring, vegetables that can be harvest early are planted, while creepers like bitter gourd, cucumber, and jhudung (long beans) are fenced so that the plant can grow properly,” Meher said.

“We have cultivated both radish and saag. Besides consuming these at home, we are also selling it in the nearby weekly market earning an average Rs 1,000. These days, we do not even need to visit the market because traders come to our house to pick up the produce,” Bedamati’s husband, Fakiram Meher said.

He also pointed out that they use organic manure prepared locally in a compost pit.

Regular consumption of green and fresh vegetables grown at the backyard has also led to an improvement in the health condition of rural villagers.

According to the Foundation, studies have indicated that the Hemoglobin level among women in the village has increased in Budelguma over time.

“In July 2015, a sample blood test of villagers including women members was conducted in Budelguma where the RNG was being implemented. Fourteen months later, another test in September 2016 indicated that the percentage of Hemoglobin among 17 women increased significantly. This rise in hemoglobin content could be safely attributed to the regular consumption of vegetables,” Dash said.

According to Ashok Bhanda of village Ratanpur, his health condition improved considerably after the regular intake of leafy vegetables from his backyard RNG.

“Whenever we want we can now get fresh vegetables and consume it. It is like a vegetable ATM for us,” Bhanda said.

Realising the potential benefit from the nutritional garden, the Odisha Livelihood Mission (OLM) has decided to adopt the model with some modification and has started to implement it in different districts of the state.

“In view of high malnutrition in rural areas and to save them from consuming vegetables with high chemical level and to ensures economic benefit, the reliance on nutrition garden could go a long way, if implemented properly,” Das stated.

State govt clamps restriction on two hazardous pesticides

November 24, 2019 By LocalWire Leave a Comment

Bhubaneswar,Nov 24 (LocalWire): Odisha government has decided to clamp restrictions on the use of Paraquat dichloride and glyphosate pesticidest, two highly hazardous pesticides, across the State.

The hazardous pesticides are having a debilitating effect on farmers’ health, causing cancer, kidney, liver and lung ailments. Demands have been raised often from various quarters to ban the herbicides as there is no known antidote to it yet.

The state agriculture and farmers’ empowerment department has asked the district level authorities of agriculture departments to keep a tab on its sale.

‘We have decided to regulate the sale of Paraquat as a prelude to its complete ban,’ said a senior official.

The agriculture department will launch an awareness drive to sensitize farmers on the pesticide-induced health issues.

Use of Paraquat dichloride and glyphosate will not be encouraged in government demonstration and subsidized sales”, the directorate letter said.

A group of senior resident doctors in government-run Veer Surendra Sai Medical College and Hospital in Burla, Sambalpur district, had protested by going hungry for a day on 13 September.

The resident doctors’ had also petitioned to the Central Insecticide Board and Registration Committee and had raised the issues of acute and chronic health problems due to paraquat exposure as it claimed 170 human lives in the state in last two years.

A group of lawyers had also called upon Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to clamp ban on the use of paraquat.

Paradip municipality generates manure by processing solid waste

November 22, 2019 By Amarnath Parida Leave a Comment

Paradip, Nov 22 (LocalWire): For the first time, Paradip Municipality has generated manure from waste to be used in agricultural fields to ensure solid waste management in the port city.

Earlier, Paradip Municipality had set up a Material Recovery Facility (MRF), a specific centre where non-compostable solid waste was temporarily stored by the civic body. Five Micro Composting Centres (MCC) were set up to decentralize the processing of organic waste and to ensure zero discharge of organic waste to the landfill.

These facilitated the municipality to leverage the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Urban Livelihoods Mission and Swachh Bharat Mission – Urban convergence by providing livelihoods to women as waste pickers. This will ensure better working conditions as they will be provided with toilets, clean water and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Solid waste management will cover all eighteen wards with everyday average collection of solid waste and garbage up to 50 tonnes.

The residents often dump garbage on the streets causing unhygienic atmosphere in the port city. Besides, many drains are choked by garbage and solid waste.

The municipality launched a campaign to create awareness by collecting garbage door-to-door. They are also using vehicles with separate cabins to collect biodegradable waste and other waste.

Executive Officer, Paradip Municipality Dillip Mohanty said solid waste generated in urban areas is segregated into wet waste (mainly from kitchens) and dry waste.

‘Wet waste is processed in the MCCs using ‘enzyme solution’ and converted to compost-manure. Through this method, the first lot of compost-manure is generated in the MCCs of Paradip Municipality in which four tonnes of wet waste generated one tonne manure, which will be used in the agricultural fields,’ he explained.

Sixteen year old develops early warning system for pest attack on crop

November 19, 2019 By LocalWire 1 Comment

Bhubaneswar, November 19 (LocalWire): Moved by reports of farmers committing suicide because of crop failure, 16-year-old Rishikesh Amit Nayak decided to understand the root of the problem.

Two years later, he has come up with a device that can alert even an uneducated farmer about pest and bacteria attacks in the field and initiate remedial action to save the crop.

“Crop failure has many reasons, but the most common is the pest attack. Once the crop is attacked by pests and the farmer is not able to detect it, it can destroy the entire crop,” Nayak said.

He is a Class XI student at the DAV Public School in Chandrasekharpur, and has already applied for a patent of his device.

The device, which Nayak has named ‘Kishan Know’, was on display at the exhibition for school and college students held here from 17 November to commemorate the birth centenary of legendary scientist Vikram Sarabhai.

The program was jointly organised by ISRO’s Satish Dhawan Space Center SHAR, Sriharikota and a city-based private university.

“My grandfather is a farmer and I have seen him depressed due to failure of the crop. It motivated me to go deep into the problem and find out what could be done,” he said.

Nayak, who took the advice of experts at the Odisha University for Agriculture and Technology (OUAT), said that crop failures are generally caused by excessive rainfall and scarcity of water besides bacterial and fungal attacks.

He focused on bacteria as it accounted for 80 per cent of the crop loss, and developed the device to detect bacteria, fungi, and viruses in crops using the Internet of Things (IoT) to arrive at the micro-level solution.

“The device requires a GSM module, a chip of circuit that can be used to establish communication, and a thermal camera,” he said.

The prototype when developed properly would cost about Rs 1,500, Nayak said adding the farmer would have to move around the field, in the perimeter where the pest attack occurs first, to take the thermal images of the plants.

“A farmer would need to do thermal scanning of the plants twice a day, once in the morning and then in the evening, and send the data to a database for analysis,” he stated.

“If any change is found in the plant temperature it would indicate certain pest or bacteria attack in the field enabling the farmer to undertake remedial measures,” Nayak said.
