Greenpeace launches awareness campaign in Odisha

September 12, 2020 By Sneha Santuka Leave a Comment

Puri, Sept 12 (LocalWire): Greenpeace India has urged people to focus on post COVID recovery plan to make food systems more resilient, ecologically sustainable, socially equitable and accessible.

The activists and volunteers of the global non-government organisation floated an awareness cut out with #hashtag #TowardsBetter” at Kaliakan in Devi River in Puri district.

“If climate change is not addressed adequately, it could seriously hinder sustainable livelihood development and poverty eradication efforts in Odisha,” Banshidhar Behera, a participant said.

With regard to post-COVID-19 recovery plans, Greenpeace India demands that the government must ensure all the future plans are in tune with mitigating and addressing climate change issues.

“When this pandemic ends, as an organization and society, our future potential will be defined by the choices we make,” senior Greenpeace campaigner Ishteyaque Ahmed said.
Our responsibilities will be to connect with individuals and their stories of resilience to a new landscape of progressive possibilities, he added.

Greenpeace India believes Covid-19 is an unintended disruption that is leading our societies, now more connected than ever to relook at the present and reimagine a sustainable and just future for India,” adds Ishteyaque.

Self-help is the best help, residents attempt to revive 100 years old pond

March 1, 2020 By Sudhir Mishra Leave a Comment

Balangir, march 1 (LocalWire) Accusing the local civic authorities of paying no heed to their problems, hundreds of residents on Sunday launched a drive to revive a 100-year-old pond to meet their need during summer.

The Narsingh Bandh pond in the city considered auspicious by residents was choked with garbage and covered with grass and filth. It was difficult to see the water beneath.

The city residents had repeatedly appealed the civic authorities for its cleaning so that the water can be used for bath and drinking especially during summer.

The authorities paid no heed. The members of the Zilla Chitragupta Kalyan Samiti, a civil society organisation decided to fix the problem.

The members and other residents on Sunday carried out the cleaning work for several hours.

“Today we cleaned the main ghat ( entry of the pond). We will clean the remaining parts of the pond gradually” Samiti president Asim Pattnaik told LocalWire.

Sporadic nesting of endangered turtles starts in Gahiramatha

February 11, 2020 By Ashis Senapati Leave a Comment

Kendrapara, Feb 11 (LocalWire) Sporadic nesting of the endangered Olive Ridley sea turtles has recently started at the Gahiramatha Beach, in the Kendrapara district.

About 20 turtles have already laid eggs within two days, officials said on Tuesday.

The forest officials are on a high alert to protect these turtles and their eggs on the beach, forest range officer Debashis Bhoi told LocalWire.

To protect the eggs from predatory animals, the forest department has established hatcheries at Aagarnasi, Pentha and Babubali within the beach, he said.

The forest guards are collecting eggs from the pits to put inside the hatcheries. All the hatcheries have been covered with plastic nets to prevent the entry of any predators, he added.

Last year, around 4.70 Lakh sea turtles nested from 26th February to 7th March on the Nasi-1 and Nasi- 2 islands.

“We have established 15 turtle protection camps including three offshore camps at Agaranashi, Barunei and Babubali islands to protect them,” he added.

The officer further said that the officials of Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) have recently put off the lights near the integrated missile testing center at Abdul Kalam Island for a safer arrival of turtles as artificial lightning disorients hatching turtles and adult females in ways that can be deadly.

To protect the endangered marine species, the state government has already banned all types of fishing within 20 km of the Ganiramatha Marine Sanctuary from 1st November, 2019 to 31st May, 2020. The Gahiramatha Beach is the largest nesting site of the sea turtles across the world.

State yet to rehabilitate 65 Satabhaya families

February 7, 2020 By Ashis Senapati Leave a Comment

Kendrapara, Feb 7 (LocalWire): Around 65 sea-erosion hit families of Satabhaya Gram Panchayat in the Kendrapara district are yet to be rehabilitated although the government rehabilitated 571 families at the rehabilitation colony at Bagapatia 12 kilometers from the sea two years ago.

“Many villagers under the Satabhaya Panchayat were rehabilitated in the colony at Bagapatia. But the authorities are yet to provide me a land far away from the sea,” a local of Satabhaya, Bishucharana Behera (50), informed LocalWire.

The 17 kilometre stretch of the beach at the seaside is said to be the fastest-eroding beach on the Odisha coast. More than 1000 homes and large tracts of agricultural land have been wiped out by rising sea levels within 40 years.

“Initially, Satabhaya was a cluster of seven villages. But now, only a little portion of Satabhaya remains while the other six villages of Gobindapur, Mohanpur, Kanhupur, Chintamanipur, Badagahiramatha and Kharikula have already disappeared from the map. Being a resident of the remote Satabhaya village, life becomes melancholic,” said Binakar Rout (50) of Satabhaya.

Rout further informed LocalWire that his father and two brothers have already got houses in the rehabilitation colony but he has been going places to book one for himself since the past two years now. “The sea has been coming closer and closer every day. Not much is left of our village,” he added.

Another resident of the village bemoaned how they are still living in the dark ages while surviving on kerosene lamps and how sanitation remains a big problem for them.

The marching sea consumed the last two tube-wells in the village of Satabhaya due to which the villagers have been suffering. “We have no water to drink at all.

We trek around three kilometres to the nearby village of Barahapur to collect water from the tube-wells over there,” informed Trilochana Behera (45) of Satabhaya.

Large tracts of Satabhaya have been wiped out by the rising sea levels for which the government had rehabilitated 571 families two years ago.

When contacted, Samarth Verma, the Collector of Kendrapara said, “We will soon rehabilitate other families of Satabhaya. Some families are still staying in Satabhaya for fishing and farming purposes.”.

World Bank-funded road project faces delay

February 7, 2020 By Hrusikesh Mohanty Leave a Comment

Berhampur, Feb 7 (LocalWire): The construction of the 2.6-km road project undertaken by the Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) under the World Bank funded Odisha Disaster Recovery Project (ODRP) over two years ago is moving at a snail’s pace.

Around 70 per cent of the road construction with an outlay of Rs 46.20-crore has been completed in three stretches so far. The road work started in December 2017 and was supposed to be completed in a year.

Recently, a three-member World Bank team who visited the city for inspection of the progress of the road was apparently unsatisfied with the slow pace of work and asked the civic body to ensure its completion by March-end.

BeMC commissioner Chakravarti Singh Rathore said informed LocalWire that the corporation has already resolved to blacklist the contractor if he fails to complete the work by March-end.

“The work was scheduled to be completed by December 2018. But the contractor requested for extension of the work. We have extended it up to March 31, 2020 and warned to blacklist him for his carelessness,” he added.

As per the sources, only Rs 10.20 crores out of Rs 46.20 crores has been spent so far.

Similarly, the stormwater drain work of about 3.5-long km in the city taken up with an estimated cost of Rs 18.43-crore under the same project of the World Bank which started in March 2019 is also moving at the same pace.

“The construction of both the drain and road works are in full swing and are expected to be completed by the end of March,” said Rathore.

A local informed LocalWire how hundreds of commuters and residents in the construction areas are faced many difficulties due to the delay in completion of the projects.

Due to delay in construction of road, many motorists are facing trouble while driving on this stretch of the road. Every day minor accidents take place.

Three-day-long Bhitarkanika Festival begins from 7 February

February 4, 2020 By Ashis Senapati Leave a Comment

Kendrapara, Feb 4 (LocalWire) Starting on 7th Feb the three-day-long Bhitarkanika Festival will be held for the first time at Nalitapatia village on the outskirts of the Bhitarkanika National Park, Kendrapada.

The Forest Department, the District Administration and the Tourism Department are jointly organizing the festival to attract more tourists to the country’s second largest mangrove forest.

The district administration will spend a sum of Rs 30 Lakhs for the festival.

“We selected the Nalitapatia village, six kilometers away from the park, for the festival so as not to disturb the wildlife in the park,” said Bikash Ranjan Dash, the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of the park.

The Bhitarkanika National Park, a Ramsar site, is home to a variety of wildlife, including spotted deer, salt water crocodiles, pythons and Sambars.

It also plays host to a large number of migratory birds during winters.

The festival will generate awareness among people about the conservation of birds and other animals, added the forest officer.

The officer informed LocalWire that during the festival, a photo exhibition, seminars and other events will be organized.

The Gahiramtha Marine Sanctuary within the park is the world’s largest rookery of Olive Ridley Sea Turtles.

In an effort to attract more tourists, the authorities have built cottages at Habelikothi, Gupti, Danagamala.

We are also giving emphasis on sustainable tourism to generate employment for the locals, added the officer.

The festival will be attended by state’s Tourism Minister, senior forest officials, tour operators, wildlife researchers, and others.

In 1975, the ministry of Forest and Environment in collaboration with the UNDP had started a crocodile breeding and rearing project in Dangamala within the Bhitarkanika Park after which the crocodile population started increasing in the creeks, river and other water bodies of the park.

The park is now a home to 1757 crocodiles as per the latest census.

Nine years back, the Guinness Book of World Records recorded a 23-foot long salt-water crocodile in Bhitarkanika as the largest crocodile in the world.

The salt water crocodile conservation programme in Bhitarkanika is the most successful one as in 1975, the park had only 96 crocodiles.
