Chhau artists enthrall audience in West Indies and Guinea

December 10, 2019 By Sibdas Kundu Leave a Comment

Baripada, December 10 (LocalWire): Where there is a will there is a way and Subhashree Mukharjee, an ardent lover of Odissi and Chhau, the traditional dance form of Odisha, has proved it even though it took him three years to take a team of Chhau artists to the international stage.

Her biggest success came when the team comprising eight Chhau artists, including five dancers and three musicians from Mayurbhanj boarded the airplane for the first time in their life to crossing international boundaries and perform in Trinidad and Tobago Island in West Indies and in Guinea.

The team not only enthralled the audiences with its performances, but also earned accolades from the high commissioners in the host countries.

It all started in copybook style at the drawing board with Mukharjee, along with another connoisseur of Odia culture Bibhudatta Das drew a road map to take Chhau global and presented it to the then district collector Rajesh Prabhakar Patil.

Patil was quick to agree with the proposal and they soon got on to the mission, which included identifying established yet neglected artists, and training the newcomers in two groups—junior and senior.

“The troupe has been able to achieve success only because of the encouragement and help provided by the then collector Patil.

We traveled extensively to all blocks and panchayats to find out the artists who were no longer in troupes.

Further orientation and training for fresher was imparted,” Mukharjee said.

Mukherjee’s initiative was part of the Project Chhauni, and is supported by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR).

According to her, the troupe would be making 12 performances on stage and hold four workshops.

“The flight expenditure is being by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), while the lodging, boarding, and remunerations are being looked after by the concerned state High Commissioners.

“Ever since the troupe was set, the artists have performed at over 50 places including outside the state.

This is the first occasion they have got a chance to perform overseas after going through a stringent selection procedure of ICCR,” Project Chhauni director Das said.

The project is being managed by a trust with Patil as the managing trustee, while Mukherjee serves as its executive director.

Koelnagar to inaugurate market place for SHGs tomorrow

December 4, 2019 By Raja Mohanty Leave a Comment

Share

Rourkela, December 4 (LocalWire): The Rourkela Municipal Corporation (RMC) will be inaugurating a market complex dedicated to the local self help groups (SHG) at Koelnagar on Thursday.

The market complex, Shakti Bazar, which aims to help the SHGs sell products made by the groups, is the brainchild of local MLA Sarada Nayak and is being implemented by the RMC to strengthen the local economy.

According to sources, the place was developed just before the Rath Yatra and was meant for the local people to sell their products.

However, the market did not take off despite all basic facilities and later the RMC decided to hand it over to the SHGs to provide them a place for market access.

“We floated a tender to invite the SHGs and received 52 proposals.

Since the market complex has space for only 44 groups, the SHGs will be accommodated on a rotational basis,” RMC deputy commissioner Sudhanshu Bhoi said.

“There is no restriction on what they sell as long as the product is made by them and this invitation is for all SHGs from across the district,” Bhoi stated.

The SHGs will be allotted the space for two months on a rotation basis, he said, adding that, “We are allowing 44 SHGs, but if a group leaves the place then others will be accommodated.

This has been decided initially but it may change with the course of time.”

The bazar will remain open from 10 AM to 10 PM and there are shades and shutters at the market complex so that the groups can store their products there.

The pledge was also taken by the Anganwadi and Asha workers, ANMs and members of the women self-help groups (WSHGs) across the district at panchayat level.

“The campaign will continue for a week, and we expect over 4.50 lakh students from 3,624 schools to take the pledge against child marriage and superstations like witchcraft and black magic. The students will take the pledge during their assembly session,” Ganjam district collector Vijay Amruta Kulange said.

Mu Satchetan (I am aware), the new concept of the administration was launched at a meeting held at the MKCG Medical College auditorium. It was attended by officers from different departments.

“We have already instructed the concerned officers, including district education officer, chief district medical officer, and the district social welfare officer to undertake the massive initiative and create awareness among the young minds,” he said.

It may be recalled that in his effort to dispel the superstitions and belief in witches and ghosts, the district collector had earlier announced a cash award of Rs 50,000 for anyone who can prove the existence of ghost.

“Since the announcement last month, not a single person came forward to take up the challenge,” the collector stated.

Similarly, the administration has also launched initiatives like Nirbhaya Kadhi and Mo Gelha Jhia to ensure rights to children and adolescents.

“The initiative is aimed to address the issues of girls, including, to put a stop to child marriage with the involvement of concerned officers and the people,” the collector said.

The Nirbhaya Kadhi, a monthly programme usually held on third Saturday at the Anganwadi Kendra, has been appreciated across the state for its impact in reducing child marriage in the district.

The programme creates awareness among the masses about the prevailing laws that makes marrying of children at a tender age an offence.

Similarly, the Mo Gelha Jhia programme launched by the administration has proved highly successful in narrowing down the gap in the child sex ratio in the district. Under the programme, the administration celebrates the birthday of every girl born in the district.

Odisha weather may rise 30 times in 2100

November 4, 2019 By LocalWire Leave a Comment

Share

Bhubaneswar, Nov 4 (LocalWire): The number of extremely hot days in Odisha is projected to increase by 30 times from 1.62 in 2010 to 48.05 by 2100 if greenhouse gas emissions continue to grow at current rates till the end of the century.

India, as a whole, will see the number of extremely hot days per year increasing by more than eight times from 5.1 (in 2010) to 42.8 (by 2100), shows the new study released today in Bhubaneswar.

The study is the first in a series of findings estimating the human and economic costs of climate change and weather shocks in India, conducted by the Climate Impact Lab in collaboration with the Tata Centre for Development at University of Chicago.

Under a high-emission scenario, the state is projected to see a 3.32°C rise in average summer temperature from 28.87°Cin 2010 to 32.19°C by 2100. It is far higher than the national average increase from about 24°C to about 28°C by the end of the century.

Neighbouring Andhra Pradesh is close behind, which is likely to see a temperature rise of 3.07°C.

By analyzing highly spatially-detailed climate data from 33 global climate models, the study reveals some alarming results that emphasize why urgent climate action is required to limit global temperature rise.

‘Odisha has a history of experiencing extreme heat-related fatalities. In the year 1998, Odisha faced an unprecedented heat wave situation, resulting in 2042 deaths.

Though extensive awareness campaigns have largely reduced the number of casualties during post 1998, still a number of casualties are being reported each year. With climate change projections signaling a 30-times rise in extremely hot days, it calls for amplified efforts to be put in place to build resilience, particularly for the vulnerable communities,’ said Pradeep Kumar Nayak, chief general manager, Odisha State Disaster Management Authority.

According to the study, under high-emission scenario, 16 out of the 36 states and union territories are estimated to become hotter than Punjab, which is currently the hottest state in India with an average annual temperature just below 32°C (as of 2010).

Punjab will continue to be India’s hottest state in 2100 with average annual temperature around 36°C.

Odisha is projected to register 42,334 excess climate-related deaths due to increase in temperature. It is almost five times more than the total deaths the state records due to cardiac arrest every year.

Between 2010 and 2018, over 6,100 people have died in India due to heat wave, with Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and West Bengal together reporting more than 90% of total deaths.

Six states, Uttar Pradesh (402,280), Bihar (136,372), Rajasthan (121,809), Andhra Pradesh (116,920), Madhya Pradesh (108,370), and Maharashtra (106,749) will contribute 64% of the total excess deaths – 1,543,708 – due to temperature rise, according to a latest research study.

‘These finding makes clear that the continued reliance on fossil fuels globally will greatly harm the well-being of Indians in the coming years and decades. They also underscore the need to find innovative adaptation strategies.

This global energy challenge that requires countries to balance the need for inexpensive and reliable sources of energy that is critical for growth, while managing climate and air pollution risks is perhaps the defining challenges of our generation,’ Michael Greenstone, faculty director at the Tata Centre for Development at University of Chicago and a co-founder of the Climate Impact Lab said.

‘The impact of carbon emissions is going to be more pronounced on societies across the globe, including India, which has already seen 2,500 deaths due to a heat wave in 2015.

The future is going to be even more worrying if a course correction is not embarked upon at the earliest and investments are not made towards mitigating the harmful effects of climate change,’ said Amir Jina, assistant professor at the Harris Public Policy and researcher at the Climate Impact Lab.

The presentation of the report was followed by a panel discussion which called for a coherent strategy on building climate resilience across sectors and communities to limit the threat climate change and extreme weather events pose.

Bhubaneswar, Oct 23 (LocaLWire): BJP’s MP from Bhubaneswar, Aparajita Sarangi, demanded an impartial inquiry into the alleged irregularities in allotment of houses under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) scheme in Begunia block of Khurda district.

In a letter to state Panchayati Raj minister, Pratap Jena, which she also tweeted, Sarangi highlighted the irregularities and sought his intervention in the matter.

‘Right people must get benefits in right manner.

No corruption, plz,’(sic) Sarangi tweeted.

‘Eligible applicants have been intentionally deleted from the approved list. Moreover, ineligible households, who have been allotted pucca houses earlier have received second allotment,’ she said.

‘The Orissa High Court had instructed the Collector of Khordha and the BDO of Begunia to take decision on deletion of beneficiaries in accordance with the law within a period of six weeks.’

However, no action has yet been taken in this regard, said Sarangi, a former bureaucrat.

The allegation of sanctioning of PMAY to ineligible households and depriving the needy is matter of grave concern, she said and requested the minister to take appropriate action as early as possible.

The system may also be streamlined so that target of universal inclusion of real beneficiaries is ensured and ‘right’ beneficiaries are selected, she said.

Bhubaneswar, Oct 21 (LocalWire): Why is a place is chosen for a port? Is it because of the geographical location? How a seafaring community can shape the regional socio-cultural ethos and why only women priests worship in a temple by the coast of Bay of Bengal?

A reader can be enriched by enthralling stories on the port city of Paradip on the eastern coast of India and the surrounding region while reading the book ‘History of Paradip’, written by educationist and writer Dr Satyanada Panda, that released on Sunday here.

While few pages of the book were left to be written, Dr Panda passed away in 2018 after a heart attack.

He taught anthropology in Utkal University and sociology in Kendrapara College briefly before going back to his village in Jhimani in Kujang block of Jagtsinghpur district, where he established a school and college and was involved in social service.

Original history based on firsthand field research is the need of the hour than being heavily dependenton British period reference books, opined Dr Damodar Rout, former legislator of Paradip, while speaking at the launch of the book.

Rout wished the book would help understand the region and growth around Paradip.

Along with capturing the journey of the port and the circumstance through which it was set up, the book speaks about how the people of the delta basin of Mahanadi depended on resources from water for a living, mainly on fish and eventually became well known as seafaring people.

Their boat building, navigational skills, sea voyages brought them wealth and exposed them to the cultures of other lands.

Calling the book monumental in retelling Odisha’s maritime history, Mr Amiya Bhushn Tripathy, state convener of INTACH, said writing regional history must be encouraged to understand our culture better.

This is a pioneering study providing rare cultural and anthropological perspectives of the region, said noted historian Dr Nivedita Mohanty on the book which has been published by Dr Satyananda Panda Memorial Trust, formed by his well-wishers to carry forward the legacy of the author.

Dr Lalatendu Dash Mohapatra, assitant director of National Archives, Bhubaneswar, explained how socio-economic and political process evolved around the region and noted writer and author Mr Anil Dhir, whose Amadeus Press publishing house published the book, said this is a unique book on a port city of the country which will help scholars, researchers, public in general to understand the coastal and maritime culture and society.

World Congress of Poets focus on wisdom poetry

October 4, 2019 By LocalWire Leave a Comment

Share

Bhubaneswar, October 4 (LocalWire): Wisdom poetry has the power to enlighten our path, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national vice-president Shyam Jaju said at the 39th World Congress of Poets at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) on Thursday.

“Poetry can make us connect to the movement that would otherwise quietly slip by us. Wisdom poetry is a counsellor helping us to understand one another batter. It can lead us away from hate to love, from violence to mercy and pity; it has the power to enlighten our path,” he said.

Jaju was speaking on the theme ‘Wisdom Poetry’ on the second day of the event.

“Wisdom poetry reveals an understanding that deep meaning can be felt in the details. Mahakavi Kalidas, Rabindranath Tagore, Sarojini Naidu, Shri Aurobinda and Atal Bihari Vajpayee are the greatest wisdom poets of India,” Jaju stated.

The symphony of human feelings like love, hate, betrayal, sensitivity, and duty can be seen as huge reflection in the work of great poet Kalidas, he added.

Speaking on the occasion, the member of Parliament from Bhubaneswar Aparajita Sarangi said that compassion is the basis of all morality. “The society doesn’t need anything more than compassion. Poetry is the great medium of compassion,” she said.

World Academy of Arts and Culture first vice-president Ernesto Kahan said, “Our generation is privileged. Until this generation, we did not have the resources to provide basic care to everyone.

But in this generation, we have the resources to provide education and primary health care to every single person in the world.”

He further stated that “Simultaneously, there is possibility and probability of destroying everything. There is a probability to destroy all humankind, to contaminate everything.

We have to be more cautious to protect humankind and our environment. Poetry is beauty and poetry is love. Maybe this world can be different from the combination of beauty and freedom, beauty and education, and beauty and love.”

Parallel poetry reading sessions on English, Chinese, Spanish, Hindi, and Odia languages on compassion were held on the day.

The second day of the event also saw the release of 67 books in various languages.

Use of fake bills to claim inputs tax credit remains high in mining belt, say officers

September 22, 2019 By Manoj Kar Leave a Comment

Share

Bhubaneswar, Sept 22 (LocalWire) Use of fake bills to claim inputs tax credit remains high in mining belt of Odisha, two senior Goods and Services Tax officers said here on Sunday.

‘Such claims are mostly found in Rourkela and Keonjhar districts,’ Additional Commissioner of GST, central excise and custom, Bhubaneswar zone, Santosh Kumar Mohanty said.

Participating in a roundtable meet ‘Two years of GST- advantages and challenges’ organized by LocalWire, a hyper-local news platform, Mohanty said the evasion by unscrupulous traders has posed as a major challenge for officials.

“ The evasion by fake invoices is the perceived grey area in the state with regard to effective implementation of GST” he said.

‘We are upgrading the mechanism to nab such evaders. The central officials have already held discussion with the state government to curb this sort of evasion, he said.

The revenue intelligence wing of the department CGST has already intercepted six cases of fake invoice and Input Tax Credit claims. On complaints, the state police have arrested these unscrupulous traders,’ he said.

The Bhubaneswar zone is armed with the services of data analytics and risk management cell. The department will initiate stringent legal action to nab the culprits, he said.

The introduction of GST was a drastic step. Within a span of two years, it has been able to bring the unorganized business sector to the fold of organized sector to a certain extent.

Despite initial hiccups, GST is gradually picking up in a state like Odisha, he pointed out.

‘GST is an evolving process. It is a chain of interdependence between government agencies and the people. In the next five to six years, it will become entirely foolproof” he said.

The people need to develop compliant mindset for filing GST returns. The government apparently does not have the mechanism to keep tab on everybody,’ Mohanty said while speaking on the occasion.

‘GST registration is extremely beneficial for traders on the threshold. Abiding by GST rules, the traders can run their business transparently, boost their business besides augmenting the national economy,’ Anand Satpathy, special commissioner, Odisha GST, said during the meet.

Odisha is a consuming state, not a production region. The state is getting more revenue from Odisha GST than central GST. Therefore the Centre’s claim that consuming states getting more benefits from GST has proved to be a myth in Odisha’s context, said Satpathy.

There was the load of service tax and value-added tax in the pre-GST regime. GST has come out as a good initiative by mopping up revenue with uniformity across the country, said added Satpathy additional special commissioner OGST.

There is the need for more traders voluntarily conforming. If the small traders make compliance, the GST would transform the national economy, said Sitaram Beria, a chartered accountant taking part in the meet.

GST is a massive transformative initiative. In two years time, there have been changes to make it more transparent and system friendly, he added.

Implementation of GST was a herculean task. Despite initial hurdle, now it is moving towards the right direction, said chartered accountant Sidhartha Ranjan speaking on the occasion.

GST should be uniform in the supply chain, observed Ashwini Rath, entrepreneur, speaking during the meet.

GST procedures are being modified from time to time to make it system-friendly for traders, said Manoj Agarwalla, chartered accountant.

It is a consumption-based tax. Investment on infrastructure could pave that way for revenue generation. Unless there is more consumption, the revenue does not have scope to go up, opined Tarun Agarwalla, chartered accountant, while speaking on the occasion.

Despite periodic modifications, there are loopholes in the GST implementation. It needs to be plugged. Those businessmen running the things in an honest and transparent way are largely happy with GST, observed Prabodh Mishra industrialist.

Berhampur, September 20 (LocalWire): Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) has decided to revive the Digital Door Numbering (DDN) system.

The process that was started about two years ago was shelved for the last one-and-half years.

“The system was not discontinued, but delayed due to late integration of the houses and localities with Google, and some technical problems with the Hyderabad-based implementing partner,” BeMC commissioner Chakravarti Singh Rathore said.

He further stated that the project will be resumed soon.

The integration with Google map of all houses as well as localities will make it easy to search, Rathore said, adding that over one lakh doors and 3,800 localities have already been numbered.

BeMC had launched the Digital Door Numbering (DDN) system, one of its kinds in the state to provide a digital number to each house in the limits of the civic body.

The nine number digital door numbering system aims to use in provisions of all basic services and fees like water tax, electricity bill, and subsidy programmes etc.

The project will generate digital door numbering through satellite imaginary information from ORSAC and field survey across the BeMC area done by technology support by a Hyderabad company.

While the first three numbers identify the locality, middle three as street and last three numbers identify the door number.

The system also aimed to provide accurate addresses with GPS coordinates which can help emergency services improve their response times as the amount of time spent searching for the emergency site sees a sharp drop.

The project initiated by the former BeMC commissioner Nikhil Pawan Kalyan was also awarded as an innovative project at the national level in 2017.

Balasrore, Sept, 10 (LocalWire): There are certain facts related to freedom fighter Bagha Jatin, that still remains a mystery even though his 104 death anniversary is observed by the people of Odisha and Bengal in particular today.

This was observed by a core committee member of Bagha Jatin memorial, Subasini Jena, while addressing a gathering held here on the occasion of martyr’s day of Jatin.

‘There are many facts pertaining to great freedom fighter Bagha Jatin that is still shrouded in mystery like after his death how was his body disposed of and where? It was not handed over to his family members.

Where are the seized pistols from him and his associates? These questions still remains unsolved even after a century of his death,’ Jena said, adding that these pertinent questions were faced by Jayshree Bhattacharya while making a documentary film on Bagha Jatin.

Quoting Bhattacharya’s observations, Jena said, ‘Government-level efforts should be made for more research on Bagha Jatin and let out the facts.’

Who is Bagha Jatin?
Jatindra Nath Mukherjee, born in 1879 at Kayagram village of Kushtia district of East Bengal (now Bangladesh) became Bagha Jatin after he killed a Royal Bengal tiger with a Khukri (a sharp knife).

With a strong sense of self respect and national pride, he joined the national movement to free India from British Raj.

He and four of his associates had a fierce gun fight with British police near Chashakhand about 10 kms from Balasore town where he received bullet injuries.

With severe wounds while he was captured by the British police and admitted to the headquarter hospital (now Barabati Girls high school), he succumbed to his injuries refusing to undergo British medical care.

History says the four others, Chittapriya Raychaudhary died in the encounter, two others Manoranjan Sengupta and Birendranath Seugupta, were hanged in Balasore jail and Jyotish was sent to Cellular jail, Andaman.

Baghajatin and his aides were hiding In Kaptipada jungle (Mayurbhanj district) to evade British arrest, before the arm battle was fought in Chasakhand.

They were waiting for a huge consignment of arms, 100,000 rifles and 6,000 pistols, to arrive at Balasore coast for an armed rebellion. The consignment never arrived and they were chased by a police team headed by Charles A Teggart.

Bagha Jatin died on Sept 10, 1915 and each year rich tributes are paid by the people of Balasore.

Rakta Tirtha Yatris from Bengal come here and visit the places associated with the freedom fighters and pay their tributes.

They visit Barabati Girls’ high school, Chasakhand and Balasore jail.

This year, too, 24 Rakta Tirtha Yatirs came to Balasore from West Bengal.

Seven others from All India freedom fighters’ association also came to pay homage to Jatin and others.

Prabal Mukharjee and Rajib Banarjee, the president and secretary of West Bengal memorial committee, who came to Balasore along with Rakta Tirtha Yatris, observed, ‘Yes, there are certain facts associated with Jatin that are still not known as no records are found in any police stations or collectorates.’

During a meeting at Barabati Girls’ High school today, the Union minister of State for animal husbandry, dairy and fisheries and micro, small and medium enterprises, Pratap Chandra Sarangi, said several freedom fighters laid down their lives and made supreme sacrifices to free the motherland from the British.

A handful of Britishers could rule India for over 200 years due to traitors.

However, the sacrifices of freedom fighters should never be forgotten and the young generation should follow their footprints and realize their value.

Ex minister Ananta Das and committee members, including Sarat Dash, Haren Rana, Sujit Dev, the district culture officer, Manaswani Rout and the district information and public relations officer, Subash Nihal, were also among others who spoke on the occasion.

Netaji: The man who inspired people to sacrifice for a free India

August 18, 2019 By Sibasish Dash Leave a Comment

Share

Bhubaneswar, August 18 (LocalWire): Seventy-three years ago, on this fateful day of 18 August, the aircraft he was traveling in crashed while taking off from a pit stop in Taiwan. Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose suffered fatal burn in the accident and could never return to his motherland.

While the accident was reported by the Japanese on 23 August, who subsequently cremated him and took his ashes to the Renkoji Temple, scores of Indians believed that their leader faked his death to again fool the British.

The skepticism was immediate, though a British investigator confirmed his death and several witnesses testified with the same details that remained consistent.

The belief that Netaji will resurface was so strong that in 1946, even Mahatma Gandhi claimed that “inner voices were telling him that Subhas is still alive and biding his time somewhere as he spent his life moving easily, sometimes secretly, from country to country.”

Born in the year 1897, Netaji shared the house with his huge family of eight brothers and six sisters.

He studied in the Anglo school Cuttack till the seventh standard and then in Ravenshaw collegiate school.

After securing the second position in the matriculation examination in 1913, he got admission at the Presidency College in Kolkata where he studied briefly.

His nationalistic temperament came to light when he was expelled for assaulting Professor Oaten for the latter’s anti-India comments.

During his early days, in a letter to his brother Sarat, he stated: “Only on the soil of sacrifice and suffering can we raise our national edifice.”

While he left home early in his student life in search of the religious life, throughout his political career, India’s liberation from British rule remained Netaji’s foremost political goal.

His view that “Britain’s enemy is India’s friend” found acceptance across length and breadth of Odisha.

He played a pivotal role in the Indian National Congress and inspired leaders from the state by disseminating the Congress resolutions in local meetings and through the local press.

In 1909, Gopabandhu Das, along with other leaders established the Satyavadi School in Puri district, which remained a hub of the freedom movement in Odisha.

Located at Cuttack in Odisha, the Netaji Birth Place Museum is an ancestral abode of the great son of the Indian soil.

He saw his struggle as a moral crusade against the evil British Empire and his epic call “Give me your blood and I will give you freedom,” found resonance across the country.

Netaji dedicated his life to freeing India from British rule.

During World War II, the British arrested him 11 times until he finally escaped. With the help of the Axis powers, he led thousands of people around the world to join forces in the fight for the freedom of India.

Health secy asks Collectors to mobilize blood donation camps in villages

August 9, 2019 By LocalWire Leave a Comment

Share

Bhubaneswar, August 9 (LocalWire): With blood banks across the state running out of supply at periodic intervals, the state government is laying emphasis on voluntary blood donations to meet the recurring blood-shortage trend.

The health centres in both the government and private sectors are in requirement of 4.5 lakh units of blood on an average annually. Last year, the state fell short of 43,000 units of blood.

The state health service network is armed with 54 government-run blood banks for patients requiring blood transfusion. The government agencies lay the top priority to blood transfusion cases of thalassemiac, sickle cell and anaemic patients.

The secretary, health and family welfare recently in an official communication appealed to the district Collectors of 30 districts to personally mobilize people at village level and organize at least one voluntary health camp a year. These camps in 7,734 gram panchayats will lead to an increase in stock in blood in bloodbanks, said senior officials of health & family welfare department.

‘The administration will convene a meeting of the panchayatiraj representatives of the district soon so that camps can be organized in a successful manner with impressive participation of voluntary donors.

We will also hold talks with the non-government organizations to organize voluntary blood donation camps so that the hospitals will have adequate stock of blood,’ said Jagatsinghpur Collector, Sangram Keshari Mohapatra.

‘Currently Jajpur district is facing blood shortage. We are prioritising blood transfusion cases of thalassemiac, sickle cell and anaemic patients.

Besides supply is also being made on a priority basis for inpatients such as road accident victims and pregnant women who require urgent blood transfusion,’ said Blood Bank authorities of Jajpur District Headquarters Hospital.

‘The voluntary blood donation culture has developed in the state over the years although there are still several misconceptions regarding blood donation.

Many believe that donating blood will have adverse effect on their health. So the need of the hour is to increase awareness on blood donation as it is a noble work that saves precious human life.

For a healthy person, donating blood twice a year will have no negative bearing and for that we need well-orchestrated campaigns round the year,’ said retired blood bank officer of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation, Dr Narendra Kumar Das.

‘During my stint in service, I found a gradual increase in the number of voluntary blood donors. As the state is still facing a shortage of blood, the government’s move in organizing voluntary blood donation camps in every gram panchayat is a welcome step,’ he concluded.

Jal Shakti Abhiyan launched in Kendrapada district

August 8, 2019 By LocalWire Leave a Comment

Share

Kendrapara, August 8 (LocalWire): The Jal Shakti Abhiyan project was launched by the minister of water resources, information and public relations, Raghunandan Das, at Kendrapada town hall today.

The Centre on 1 July included 256 districts including Kendrapara, the only district from Odisha, in its Jala Shakti Abhiyan.

The project was launched by Union Water Resources minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat in New Delhi to start a campaign in the water-stressed districts and blocks.

Jal Shakti Abhiyan is a campaign for water conservation and water security. The campaign will run with people’s participation in the district as authorities will educate people on rainwater harvesting, water conservation, cleaning of water bodies, improvement of groundwater level, checking the ingress of salinity in coastal pockets, reuse of water and recharging of structures, watershed development, intensive afforestation and other water conservation methods.

The scheme also aims to promote irrigation efficiency as a mass movement through asset creation, said Das.

‘Jal Shakti Abhiyan will bring positive changes in people for water conservation. We will educate and help people to work towards conservation of water.

These efforts will also be supplemented with special interventions including the development of block and district water conservation plans, promotion of efficient water use for irrigation and better choice of crops through Krishi Vigyan Kendra.

The district administration will involve students, SHGs, punchayat raj institution members, ex-servicemen, social workers and others, said the minister.

The scarcity of fresh water due to ingress of sea water in the district’s seaside villages is a major problem.

Under this project, we will help the coastal people to conserve rainwater through harvesting systems under Jal Shakti Abhiyan project, added the minister.

The forest, agricultural, soil conservation, irrigation, drainage and rural water supply and sanitation departments will prepare a comprehensive action plan to implement the project in the district, said Das.

‘Many seaside villages were virtually floating on an ocean of sweet water three decades back.

But due to excess use of ground water and also due to sea erosion, the salinity level in the water has been increasing year by year.

We are happy that the Centre included Kendrapada district in its Jal Shakti Abhiyan to educate villagers not to extract more water from the ground and to promote the use of water from ponds, rivers and other water bodies,’ said Pradip Jena, the principal secretary of water resources department.

The meeting was also addressed by district Collector Samarth Verma, Kendrapada MLA Sashibhusan Behera, Aul MLA, Pratap Dev, Patkura MLA, Sabitri Agrawalla, Mahakalapada MLA, Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak and others.

Dried-up Mahanadi sends ripples of fear in Jagatsinghpur

July 23, 2019 By Amarnath Parida Leave a Comment

Share

Jagatsinghpur, July 23 (LocalWire): Rivers flowing through Jagatsinghpur district have dried up affecting crops, industries and household usage.

Scanty rainfall and stopping of Mahanadi water by the Chhattisgarh government by constructing a number of dams and barrages upstream has worsened the situation and Mahanadi and its branches, which are the lifeline of thousands of people in the district, have completely dried up.

Nearly eight rivers including Mahanadi, Devi, Chitropla, Paika, Hansua, Gobari, Balia and Alaka flow through the district.

Three of them, Gobari, Balia, Alaka, are treated as dead rivers due to encroachments and blockage of water. During rainy season, these rivers see some flow but this year the rivers are parched due to scanty rainfall and acute shortage of water in the Hirakuda reservoir.

The district Fisheries Officer, Subrat Kumar Das, said, ‘the state government is aware about the water crisis and the fisheries department had sought the intervention of Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore, six months back for a detailed project report to activate the dead rivers and mitigate the water crisis towards cultivation and drinking water purposes but no DPR has yet been prepared or submitted to the Central government.’

Farming and fishing have been severely affected while day to day needs of riverside villages have been affected.

Thousands of domestic animals are also living in critical condition due to acute shortage of water.

Former MP, Bibhu Prasad Tarai, said, ‘The drying up of the river has become a cause of concern for the residents of the port town which lies downstream.

This will not only deprive the port town of drinking water but will also affect various industries operating in the region.’

Realising the crisis, he had proposed to the state government to implement inter-river connection with water flowing to dead rivers.

‘This project could help stock water in dead rivers and help cultivation and drinking water during crisis but the state government dis not pay heed,’ Tarai added.

Experts said due to lack of water flow, the ecosystems in these rivers are in peril.

The biodiversity is suffering due to delays in resolving the water sharing issue between Chhattisgarh and Odisha. The river bed is now filling up with piles of sand.

Scanty rainfall has added to the woes of the farmers as their crops have been severely affected.

“The objective is to take away the fear of police out of a child’s mind,” Sharma stated, adding that while they have already developed two child-friendly police stations (PS) in the district, all other PS will be made child friendly soon.

The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), country’s apex child-protection body had recommended a child-friendly corner or room in all police stations and also released guidelines for the establishment of child-friendly police stations, sources said.

“The room was set up as per the provisions of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015 and in accordance with the guidelines of the NCPCR,” district child protection officer (DCPO)Arun Kumar Tripathy said.

According to Tripathy, they spent around Rs 30,000 to 40,000 in each police station to set up the child friendly corner, while the police authorities allotted the room in the premises of the police station.

Bhubaneswar, July 17 (LocalWire): Odisha is shaping the future of India in sports, Dr Achyuta Samanta, MP, Kandhamal, today said in Parliament while taking part in in a session on discussion and voting on the demands for grants for ministry of youth affairs and sports during the ongoing budget session.

He said today’s youth will shape the country’s tomorrow and sports has a tremendous role to play in this regard.

Raising various grass-root issues of sport in the country, Samanta said, ‘we should strive to achieve our best potential.

Odisha now has become the sports capital of India due to continuous effort of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. World-class sports infrastructure has been created in the tribal-dominated state due to his efforts. In Indian hockey team, Odia players including Dilip Tirkey and many others have found place for the last so many years.’.

He also cited the example of Dutee Chand who won gold in the recently-concluded World University games in Italy.

Drawing parallel to active campaigns for schemes like Swachha Bharat, Ujjwala, Ayushman and Soubhagya schemes introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said that similar campaigns are needed for sports to develop in the country.

‘We need to handhold and guide children from the formative stage and provide them suitable training and empower them with assurance of education and career, so that they can excel at the top level. Khelo India programme already has been introduced to revive the sports culture in India at grass root level by building strong framework.

We have to give more importance to it,’ Samanta said.

Kendrapada, July 17 (LocalWire): People paid tributes to noted freedom fighter and poet Ananda Jena on the occasion of his 135th birth anniversary today in Kendrapara.

Addressing the meet, Dr Basudev Das, member of Odisha Sahitya Academy, recalled the role of Ananda Jena during the freedom struggle.

‘Ananda Jena was a revolutionary who fought against the tyranny of Raja of Kanika during the British Raj.

He was totally ignored by the government till 20 years back when some residents of Kendrapada restored Jena’s memory to the pride of place it deserves.

They installed his statue in Kendrapadra town to remember his sacrifice,’he said.

History of freedom movement in Odisha will remain incomplete without the mention of the struggle of the peasants in Kanika.

Large number of peasants fought against the British and the despot King of Kanika.

Jena fought against the king who was exploiting the people by imposing 64 types of taxes.

He was dismissed from his service at the Kendrapada Local Board for participating in the freedom movement and writing a poem ‘Dukhini Kanika’.

‘Ananda Jena spent three months with Gandhiji at Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad in 1917,’ said Professor Nanda Kishor Parida, the former principal of Kendrapada College.

The meeting was also addressed by Kendrapara MLA, Sashibhusan Behera, district Collector Samarth Verma, Sanjay Jena, Pradip Das and others.

Bhubaneswar, July 11 (LocalWire): National guidelines for the management of acute liver failure has been formulated at Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS).

Thirty five experts and liver disease specialists from Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, Lucknow, Chandigarh and Bhubaneswar were part of the task force led by Dr S K Acharya, Pro-chancellor, KIIT University (Chairman) and Dr A C Anand, professor and Head, department of gastroenterology and hepatology, KIMS.

They discussed how ALF in India is distinctly different than what is described in Western textbooks.

India has mainly viral hepatitis-induced ALF in contrast to many Western countries, where paracetamol poisoning is the commonest cause.

It also meant that India also needed a different definition of this disease and some of the classifications described from the West may not be relevant in India, they opined.

ALF is the most dangerous liver disease.

A healthy young person, if afflicted, can die within a matter of days.

INASL constituted a taskforce to bring out national guidelines to manage ALF with Professor Emeritus S K Acharya, as the chairman of the taskforce and Professor A C Anand, as the convener.

Professor Emeritus Y K Chawla, Director Academics at KIMS is one of senior members and advisers to the task force.

Decision to transplant liver in a given patient is very crucial one.

Which patients will require liver transplant is a critical decision and how that decision will be made was deliberated upon.

Liver transplant surgeons were also a part of the group and management of patient at liver transplant center was also discussed.

The deliberation of the consensus meeting will finally be published in an internationally indexed journal.

Indian national association for the study of liver (INASL) is a national body comprising liver disease specialists.

It often issues guidelines for treatment of various liver diseases.

So far there were no guidelines for the management of acute liver failure in India, although a considerable amount of work has been done in this subject.

A checklist was prepared to outline the management in the resource-poor setting.

Importance of intensive care was stressed at all levels.

When patients need transfer to a tertiary care center, the precautions to be taken enroute were also discussed and finalised.

Special emphasis was given to strategies to prevent cerebral edema which is main kiiler complication of ALF.

Some important aspects of treatment such as plasmapheresis, high volume plasma exchange and artificial liver support were also debated on and their exact role in management was discussed.

Another important aspect of this meeting was discussion on paediatric patients.

Paediatric hepatologists were also involved to discuss special requirements in neonate and infants as well as small children.

Dr Achutya Samanta, founder of KIIT, KISS and KIMS welcomed the experts of the task force.

Corporate sector to support employment scheme for rural youth in Jagatsinghpur

June 20, 2019 By Amarnath Parida Leave a Comment

Paradip, June 20 (LocalWire): The district administration in Jagatsinghpur has sought support from local industries and corporate houses in driving the government initiative of providing jobs for rural youths under the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya Yojana (DDU-GKY).

The DDU-GKY, an initiative of the Ministry of Rural Development aims to train the rural poor and provide them with regular jobs that can earn them a monthly salary, above the prescribed minimum wages.

The rural youths, however, are unwilling to work in cities like New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, and others because the minimum wages that they earn there is not sufficient to maintain their living.

Realising this, the district administration had organised a meeting with local corporate like Paradip Port Trust (PPT), Paradeep Phosphate Ltd, IFFCO, JSW Steel Limited of Jindal Group, Empire Hotels, International Hotel and other companies in the private sectors to explore opportunity of generating employment for the local youths after they undergo skill development programs from the project implementing agencies (PIAs).

According to District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) project director Brajgopal Achraya, the government had approved seven PIAs to train local unemployed youths and to create employment opportunities for them.

The district administration disclosed that while the DRDA is targeting to train 1,058 beneficiaries during the current financial year, the local corporate sector had agreed to support the government’s initiative by engaging these youths.

During the interaction, the local administration informed the participants that the majority of the PIAs are providing training in accounting and back office, retail business, hospitality and hotel management, and customer care services.

Youths have also been trained to work as fitter and wielder while Paradip Port Trust has given a proposal to train local youths on marine technologies so that it would be easier for PPT to employ them.

Representatives of other companies who attended the meeting also gave their suggestions on the skill sets that they need and advised the PIAs to train the rural youths as per the industry requirement to make it easier for them to absorb them in jobs.

ADM Paradip Kanhu Charan Dhir, ORMAS deputy director Nilakanth Rath, Paradip Municipality executive officer Dillip Kumar Mohanty, and DDU-GKY district coordinator Pabitra Swain were present in the meeting.

Buddha’s history in Jagannath’s Abode; five must-visit sites

May 21, 2019 By Abhisek Pani Leave a Comment

Share

Bhubaneswar, May 21 (LocalWire): Archaeological evidence throws light on the rich Buddhist cultural heritage in Odisha. Here are five Buddhist sites in the state one must visit.

Scholars say, Biraja (modern-day Jajpur) was a cradle of the Mahayana sect of Buddhism – the sacred land of Buddha Padpmaprabha.

Chinese traveler Huen Tsang had visited the place between 7th and 8th century to witness this holy abode.

1. Pushpagiri

Pushpagiri is an ancient Buddhist place located at the peak of Langudi hills in Jajpur district. It has relics and structures dating back to the 3rd century. Like Nalanda and Takshashila, it is believed to be an educational hub.

2. Lalitgiri

Lalatgiri is one of the oldest Buddhist sites in Odisha, maintained as a cultural chain starting from the post-Mauryan period until 13th century. It is situated in Jajpur district, about 80 km from the state capital.

3. Udayagiri

Udayagiri or the ‘Sunrise Hill’ is a Buddhist site located on the banks of River Birupa, nearly 90kms from Bhubaneswar. It was an active site from the 7th century to the 12th century.

4. Ratnagiri

Ratnagiri in Jajpur district of Odisha is often referred to as the ‘Hill of Jewels’. This site is located between Birupa and Brahmani rivers.

Due to education and intellectual resources, the ‘Lalitgiri-Udayagiri-Ratnagiri’ trio is known as Diamond Triangle.

5. Shanti Stupa

One of the popular landmarks of Odisha’s Buddhist heritage is Dhauli International Peace Pagoda (Shanti Stupa), situated on the banks of Daya River. It has edicts of Emperor Ashoka, narrating incidents of Kalinga War that converted him from ‘Chanashoka’ to ‘Dharmashoka’.

Khandagiri-Udayagiri caves, Kurumi excavations near Konark, Jaugada Hills which once contained the deep rooted culture of Buddhism, are a few to name. Somewhere in dates of centuries, in the kinship of Buddha Purnima to Chandan Purnima of Jagannath, Buddhism’s testimony shared heavenly domicile in the predominant Jagannath society.

Another college girl Mamata Sahu said ‘today’s awareness programme has inspired us. We have the power and need to make use of it. Even one vote can change everything.’

The sky was dotted with helium balloons. Youth voters and PWDs also participated in the voter awareness programme on the beach.

Several first time voters cannot cast their vote as they are staying away for studies while many youth are not sure about the changes politicians will bring.

On the other hand, because of lack of facilities old persons and pregnant women feel uneasy to cast their vote.

To garner interest of these voters, administration has introduced many programmes by implementing different facilities in booths and raised awareness programmes in village level to raise percentage of votes.

Two women-centric booths, one booth for people with disabilities and two model booths in each block, volunteers including NCC and boy scouts have been pressed into service during polling.

ADM, Paradip Kanhu Charan Dhir, ADM Jagatsinghpur Sachidananda Sahu and other officials were present on this occasion.
