Bhubaneswar, July 30 (LocalWire): The Central Zoo Authority has de-recognised more than 60% zoos in the state. CZA, the country’s apex body monitoring the well being of caged wild animals, called for improved infrastructure and basic facilities in 16 of the 26 zoos operating in the state.
Recognition to these 16 zoos were withdrawn in various phases during the last year after CZA officials found the living condition of captive animals unsatisfactory to the standard laid down in the CZA rulebook.
Concerned zoo authorities did not abide by the standard and norms earmarked for zoo upkeep and maintenance.
This apart, Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 norms were also flouted in some of the zoos, a CZA official said.
The zoo authorities have been asked to maintain CZA standard procedural norms for further accordance of recognition license, he said.
On the other hand, the Nandankanan biological park in Bhubaneswar was found to have maintained ambient and congenial living condition for animals held in captivity, he added.
Nandankanan zoo nestled along the lush-green forest cover, swirling water bodies adjacent to Chandaka-Dampara Wildlife Sanctuary, is famous as country’s most scenic zoo.
It is spread across 437 hectares on the outskirts of the capital.
