New Delhi/Bhubaneswar, Jan 8 (LocalWire) Odisha chief minister and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) supremo Naveen Patnaik on Tuesday lashed out at the Centre for giving a deaf ear to Odisha’s demand for increasing Minimum Support Price (MSP) of the paddy.
Addressing Krushak Adhikar Samabesh at Talkatora Stadium in New Delhi, Patnaik said: “We repeatedly requested the Centre to hike the MSP of paddy for Odisha. But none paid any heed to it.”
“Even Prime Minister Narendra Modi didn’t meet the members of the House Committee that was formed to discuss the MSP issue with him.
It seems after forming the government in Delhi, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) forgot all promises it made to Odisha before elections,” said Patnaik.
He said the Odisha government will always work for the farmers of the state.
“Our farmers are the backbones of our economy.
The Odisha government recently launched the KALIA (Krushak Assistance for Livelihood and Income Augmentation) scheme for them and will keep working for their development.
But has the Centre implemented recommendations of the Swaminathan Committee?” he asked.
“Had the Centre been really concerned about Odisha farmers, it would have waived off their loans like it did for farmers in Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh,” he said.
The CM further said: “We would have never come to beg before the Centre had we be given financial autonomy.
The Odisha government is capable of developing and prospering its people with its own funds.”
Meanwhile, criticizing the farmers’ convention, Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) president Niranjan Patnaik tweeted: “Today Naveen Patnaik and Co. are going on a picnic to Delhi which costs Rs 52 lakh.
They are doing this in the name of the farmers. Had this money been given to farmers in debt, many precious lives of our annadatas could have been saved.”
“The BJD should stop shedding crocodile tears in the name of our farmers, as they are equally responsible for destroying the agri sector of Odisha. Their farmers’ rally is a big farce,” he said.
“If the BJD had any concern about the farmers of Odisha, they would have waived off farm loans like the Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh Congress govts.. and also announced bonus on MSP,” said Niranjan.
“Instead of spending on this hogwash, CM @Naveen_Odisha should have considered bailing out the farmers of Odisha.
If Congress Govts in MP, Rajasthan, Punjab, Karnataka & Chhattisgarh can waive off farm-loans, what is stopping Naveen Babu from helping our farmers? Outrageous!” he tweeted.
