Berhampur: Feb 23 (Localwire): A new prison complex constructed to replace the century-old Bhanjanagara jail in Ganjam district would be launched soon, an official said.
Chief minister Naveen Patnaik had already inaugurated the building in his last visit to the town.
Built at a cost of around Rs12 crore, the building can accommodate up to 300 inmates, both men and women. It also has 12 special cells to house hardcore criminals.
It took nearly five years to complete the building.
“We will shift to the new jail building with all the inmates. Presently, some 200 inmates are housed in Bhanjanagara prison,” said Bhanjanagara jail superintendent Sarbeswar Sahu.
The delipidated 100-year old Bhanjanagara prison was a major security risk as many inmates, including under-trials, had in the recent past managed to escaped from the complex.
