Baripada, Feb 16 (LocalWire):A century-old pond near a cremation ground at Barunei turns into a dumping yard due to carelessness on the part of the Baripada Municipality Authority.
No exact date of the construction of the pond was found in the records of the municipality.
The pond is situated towards north of the cremation ground of Barunei.
The condition of the pond is poor as no renovation has been done since years.
The water of the pond has dried up due to the deposition of silt and the continuous dumping of moral remains into it.
The locals are afraid of going to the pond due to the fear of snakes.
Neither the district administration, nor the municipality has paid any attention to its dilapidated condition.
The pond was constructed years ago to satisfy the need of water in performing the last rites of the dead.
Manoranjan Sethi, a citizen of Purunahatsahi, who went to the cremation ground on Saturday to perform the last rites of his grandmother said, “There wasn’t enough water in the pond to perform the ritual.”
Lalit Kumar Das, another local, said that the pond plays an important role in performing the rituals of cremation.
“I haven’t seen the pond renovated since my childhood. While people have provided financial assistance for the erection of the cremation hall, the pond has been neglected ever since,” he added.
Jitendra Mohanty, another local, said that the Former Vice Chairman of the municipality had cleaned up around the pond and sent a proposal for the renovation of pond to the higher authorities but to no avail.
When contacted, the Executive Officer of Baripada Municipality, Saroj Kumar Das, said that the renovation of the pond is necessary and assured that he would send the Junior Engineer to visit the spot and further steps will be taken soon enough.
