Rourkela, Dec 31 (LocalWire) Utkal Ranjan Sahoo, a rated chess player of Rourkela city, who got the first International Master (IM) norm about six years back, got his second and third IM norms recently in a span of just one week.
After qualifying for three IM norms, he is now inches away from getting the IM tag, since he now needs to improve his ratings by 13 points only.
Sahoo got his first IM norm about six years back. But after his admission in B Tech courses, he had not been able to proceed much in respect of his IM norms in chess.
However, while participating in Bangladesh Premier Division Chess League 2018, which was played from Dec 6-16, Sahoo qualified for the second IM norm with his splendid performance.
Out of ten rounds, he scored 8 points with seven wins, two draws and one loss.
During this tournament, Sahoo also improved his ratings by about 52 points.
Sahoo continued his performance in Bhopal International Chess Championship, played between Dec 21-28 and achieved his third IM norm.
In this tournament, out of ten rounds, he scored 8 points with six wins and four draws and also improved his rating by another fifty points.
Sahoo now stands at 2387 points against requirement of 2400 for qualifying for IM status.
He was given a rousing reception here on Sunday, after his return to the city.
“It is a great achievement for me, particularly when I was not able to concentrate much due to my studies. But thankfully, I have been able to qualify for two required norms in quick succession,” said Sahoo.
“I need to improve by 13 points now, which i feel is well within my reach,” he said.
