Berhampur, March 14 (LocalWire) The price of chicken has dropped by fifty per cent in the silk city of Berhampur amid rumours of coronavirus infecting poultry.
The price of the egg also has dropped despite the awareness campaign launched by veterinarians that the coronavirus is transmitted only through human contact and there is no evidence it communicates from animals to human to animals.
The price of chicken has dropped to Rs. 60 from Rs 140 per kg, SK Sukla, a wholesaler in Berhampur said.
The price of the egg has also dropped to Rs.3.30 from Rs 4.50 per piece in the wholesale market. However, the sales of mutton and fish remain unaffected in the city.
Ganjam district is considered one of the major producers of the chicken and eggs.
It is home to as many as 377 poultry farms, including 335 broiler farms and 42 layer farms.
“It has become very difficult to run the farm as prices have dropped drastically,” a poultry farm owner said.
