Berhampur, June 30 (LocalWire): An air-conditioned room equipped with a television set, toys and storybooks are some of the facilities that are being readied in the district and sessions judge court at Paralakhemundi in Gajapati district to make children feel safe and secure before deposing at the court during court proceedings in the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) cases.
District and sessions judge, Gajapati, Biswajit Das, on Saturday inaugurated the child-friendly children’s court in the presence of district Collector, Anupam Saha, SP (Gajapati) Sarah Sharma and several other officers.
Additional district and sessions judge court, that deals POCSO cases, attached the room through video conferencing.
The child victim can depose the statement or witness the court proceedings from the room without having to be present at the court.
The special child-friendly court was designed by the district administration, the district child protection officer Arun Tripathy said.
‘This room was made keeping the child victims in mind. They will get all the facilities and feel secure and safe in this room,’ he said.
The POCSO Act states the child should not be exposed to the accused while recording statements during trial.
At the same time, the accused should be able to hear the statements of the child. The Act also envisages the recording of the statement of the child through videoconferencing, officials said.
The state high court directed 11 out of 30 districts to make child-friendly children’s courts. Gajapati is one of them, officials added.
