Berhampur, Feb 13 (LocalWire): The managing director of a Surat-based Chit Fund company was arrested by the police on charges of duping over 300 people worth Rs 2 Crore in Ganjam district.
The accused has been identified as Gopal Rout (42) of Kulangi under the Gangapur Police Station. Rout was arrested from Bhanjanagar on Wednesday and produced in court on Thursday.
“A case was pending against Rout at the Goshaninuagon Police Station since 2017 based on a complaint filed by one of the victims RK Padhy,” said the Inspector In-charge, Goshaninuagon Summet Soren.
Acting on a tip off, a Police team rushed to Bhanjanagar and arrested him. Earlier, Rout was staying at Surat in Gujarat.
He has been booked under different sections of IPC, Prize Chits and Money Circulation Schemes (PCMCS) Banning Act, 1978 and Odisha Protection of Interests of Depositors (OPID) Act,” the Police said.
Several documents have been seized from him. A team of the police will go to Surat for further investigation in his office. The Inspector also promised to find out more about others involved in the scam.
Rout is the Managing Director of the Sai Land Property Management India Limited, a Surat based Chit Fund firm.
He lured people by promising them higher rates of interest on their deposits and plots registered in their names in the Aska area of Ganjam district, he added.
As per the preliminary inquiry, the police said that they have identified as many as 308 persons duped by the accused person. The total amount sums up to about Rs 1, 96,800. Most of those deceived by Rout belong to the Ganjam district and Surat.
