Berhampur, Dec 25 (LocalWire) Amid tight security, Christians of Kandhamal district celebrated their biggest annual festival Christmas on Tuesday, while tribal outfit Kandhamal Kui Samaj Samanwaya Samiti (KKSSS) celebrated its martyr’s day to mark the death anniversary of its leader Khageswara Mallick at Barkhama, near Baliguda.
Braving bone-chilling cold, hundreds of Christians thronged to decorated churches since Monday midnight, even though the night temperature of Phulbani dipped to 5 degree Celsius.
“The Christmas celebrations were peaceful in the district. There was no untoward incident reported from anywhere,” said Superintendent of Police (Kandhamal) Prateek Singh.
The tribal dominated district has a sizable population of Christians.
The churches across the district were decorated with colourful lights, stars and festoons, while amid singing of carols, Christians performed their midnight masses in the churches, most of which were guarded by armed forces.
Besides singing carols dedicated to Jesus Christ and his mother Mary, in several churches, school girls performed various cultural functions.
“It’s a special day for us and we thank the district administration for making adequate security arrangements,” said Suprabha Mishra.
Security was tightened across the district for the festival.
While around 30 platoons of police forces were deployed in sensitive places, police also intensified patrolling in the district at night.
