Bhubaneswar, Dec 13 (LocalWire): Representatives of the Muslim community today felt reassured after Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik reiterated that the state government would not implement the National Register of Citizens.
Discontent over Citizenship (Amendment) Act and NCR is brewing in some parts of the state with Muslims opposing the Centre’s move to grant citizenship on religious basis.
Members of the Muslim community staged a peaceful demonstration at Binjharpur in Jajpur district. Similar show of protest was also witnessed in specific pockets of Kendrapara, Bhadrak and Balasore districts.
‘We met Naveen babu today and apprised him of the growing feeling of insecurity among Muslims over Citizenship (Amendment) Act and NCR. The chief minister assured us that his government will ensure the safety and security of Muslims in the state,’ Mohammad Abdul Bari, one of the representatives said.
‘Naveen babu also promised that the state government will not implement NCR in Odisha,’ Bari added.
As per 2011 census, Muslims (9,11,670) comprise 2.2 percentage of the state’s total population.
The district headquarter town of Bhadrak with 35 percent of the total population is home to the maximum number of Muslims.
Other major Muslim-inhabited areas in the state are Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Kendrapara and Jajpur, according to the census report.
