Bhubaneswar, May 23 (LocalWire): Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Thursday congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the huge mandate to BJP in the general elections and said his government will work constructively with the centre for the state’s welfare.
He said he telephoned PM Modi to congratulate him on the election victory.
Patnaik expressed “deep gratitude to the people of Odisha for their blessings on BJD”, and also thanked the party cadres for their hard work in the elections.
“I want to thank, particularly women, who have come out in large numbers to vote,” Patnaik said.
Of the 21 Lok Sabha seats, BJD was leading in majority of the seats. It was also leading in over 100 seats in the 146-member assembly, while BJP was leading in 24 seats.
Odisha has over 3.18 crore eligible voters, of which 1,63,76,190 are male and 1,54,62,049 are female. It also has 2,932 voters of the third gender.
The BJP on Thursday swept the national elections by winning a majority of the seats in the 543-member Lower House of parliament. According to the latest trends, the BJP-led NDA was leading in over 350 seats.
In 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the saffron party had won 282 seats, while the BJP-NDA combined bagged 336.
The 17th Lok Sabha elections were held in seven phases from April 11 to May 19, 2019, in all the states and the union territories. The counting of votes was held on May 23.
