Bhubaneswar, Nov 22 (LocalWire): Hitting out at the Opposition for raking up women-related crimes for political gain, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today made an uncharacteristically emotive appeal to them.
‘With all humility, I would like to express my deep concern, let’s not politicize tragedy related to women and children.
Let me tell you, this kind of politics will never give any return.
We represent 4.5 crore people of Odisha. Let us set high standards of political discourse both in the Assembly and outside,’ Patnaik addressing the House said with a tinge of emotion.
He said, ‘Rape, murder, death of women are extremely sad events.
Politicizing them multiplies the trauma and gives the wrong message to people at large and young people in particular.
In case anyone is not satisfied with the investigation, there are legal fora for relief.’
During the course of the winter session of the Assembly, Opposition BJP and Congress trained their guns at Patnaik-led government almost on a daily basis raking up the sexual assault on women and mysterious death of a panchayat extension officer in Jajpur district.
It has apparently put the government on the back foot.
The Opposition’s charge is that the government is trying to scuttle the investigation because of alleged involvement of some ruling party men in the much-publicized case.
‘Today I am not going to make a regular statement.
Forget that I am the Chief Minister for 19 years or that I am the president of Biju Janata Dal. As a senior member of the House, I would like to mention that politicizing any human tragedy especially to women is inhumane.’
Reiterating his government’s committed resolve to deal with women-related crimes, he stressed that crime against women will be one of the topmost priorities and the government will leave no stone unturned to ensure that justice is done.
Neglect especially relating to women and children will not be spared, exemplary action will be taken, the Chief Minister assured the members.
Due to prompt and professional investigations, death penalty has been awarded to the accused under POCSO act in sensational cases of rape and murder of minor girls, he said, emphasizing that there has been an increase in the conviction rate in the red-flag cases which has gone up to 41.48% in 2019.
