Berhampur, March 19 (Localwire): In a surprise move, BJD chief Naveen Patnaik has nominated 70-year old SHG worker Pramila Bisoi from the Aska parliamentary seat.
Bisoi has been working for various social causes like community development, and wildlife and environment protection, besides being an active member of a self-help group.
Her nomination has not just surprised BJD members but also her family and relatives.
Delighted over her candidature, grandson Ranjan Bisoi said: “Entire village is happy for her.”
Bisoi is credited for transforming the lives of hundreds of poor and unemployed women in Aska through alternate livelihood schemes.
Reacting to the development, a political analyst said the chief minister wants to send out the message that in democracy everyone can sit in parliament and became a law-maker.
“There’s no barrier for her if she doesn’t know English or Hindi. She can communicate in her mother tongue,” he said.
The Aska seat fell vacant last month after sitting BJD MP Ladu Kishore Swain passed away due to ill health.
In another surprise move, Naveen had recently picked young Chandra Sekhar Sahu to replace two-time MP from Berhampur and actor-turned-politician Sidhant Mohapatra.
Sahu had joined BJD last year. In 2004, he was elected from Berhampur in a Congress ticket and went on to become a central minister. However, he lost elections in 2009 and 2014.
“I will seek support from all members of BJD, including Sidhant Mohapatra and Ramesh Chandra Chaupatnaik for the party’s victory in the election,” said Sahu.
Patnaik had sprung another surprise recently by fielding former Rajya Sabha member Achyuta Samant from Kandhamal. Samant was replaced by Pratyusha Rajeshwari Singh in 2014 after the death of her husband Hemendra Chandra Singh.
