Rourkela, Nov 27 (LocalWire): Both Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have reportedly supported the dawn-to-dusk bandh called by Rourkela Bar Association (RBA) on Tuesday demanding district status to Rourkela and a permanent bench of Odisha High Court here.
According to reports, the RBA had organised a meeting with various socio-cultural organisations and political parties to garner their support.
The Congress and BJP local units have extended their support to the shutdown, said sources.
Activists staged their agitation by blockading several locations of the city, including Bisra Chowk, Sector 21 Square, Sector 7/17 Square and Panposh Chowk since early morning, thereby disrupting public movement.
According to reports, they also burnt tyres on the roads at some locations.
A section of activists also went on a picketing drive in the main road area of the city.
All shops and commercial establishments of Rourkela remained closed on Tuesday.
The RBA, in a press release, claimed the bandh was a success and extended thanks to the people of Rourkela for spontaneously supporting the shutdown.
“We are thankful to all sections of public for supporting the bandh,” RBA president said Satya Sharma.
