Jajpur, Oct 23 (LocalWire): Congress supporters today demonstrated in front of the office of the Superintendent of Police at Panikoili in Jajpur district demanding a CBI inquiry into the mysterious death of Smitarani Biswal, panchayat executive officer of Haridaspur gram panchayat.
Rupesh Bhadra, the sarpanch’s husband, has been arrested for allegedly abetting Smitarani Biswal’s suicide at his guest house in Charabatia village, said Charan Singh Meena, the Superintendent of Police, Jajpur.
‘Smitarani was gang-raped and killed but the police are trying to shield the culprits.
We demand the arrest of all the accused and CBI probe into the incident, said Smurtirekha Pahi, the general secretary of women’s wing of Congress.
Pahi also alleged that criminal activities are on the rise in Jajpur district and that the ruling party BJD is patronizing unscrupulous elements and forcing police not to take any action against them.
Residents are afraid after the rise in crime. People of Jajpur and its surrounding areas are living in constant fear as the number of crimes in the area has suddenly shot up.
Congress leaders Mohammed Moquim, Suresh Kumar Routray, Satya Prakash Nayak and other leaders were also present during the demonstration.
Congress and BJP leaders alleged that Rupesh Bhadra, the accused, had illegally built a two-storied guest house over forest land where Smitarani’s body was found.
Gautam Ray, the president of BJP district unit said the guest house should be demolished and legal action should be taken against the encrocher.
Revenue and forest lands were being encroached upon by building houses and other permanent constructions while the authorities did not take any action against them, alleged Roy.
District collector of Jajpur, Ranjan Kumar Das said, ‘We will not spare any encroacher who have illegally occupied government and forest land by building houses. All the encroachers will be evicted as per law.’
Sushil Kumar Biswal, the victim’s husband first raised suspicion that his wife did not commit suicide. But preliminary investigations pointed to the possibility of suicide.
The couple married eight years ago and has a seven-year-old daughter.
