Berhampur, Feb 13 (LocalWire) Several aspirant candidates, wanting to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha and state assembly polls in Ganjam and Gajapati districts on Congress tickets, on Wednesday visited Congress Bhaban here to claim support before the screening committee.
Congress screening committee member N.Solanki discussed with party functionaries to select some of the probable candidates for two Lok Sabha and 15 assembly segments of both the districts.
The probable candidates’ list selected by the screening committee will be submitted to All India Congress Committee (AICC) for final call, said a senior leader.
“Winnability will be given weightage while selection of candidates for Lok Sabha and state assembly,” he said.
Party supporters from all assembly constituencies have presented their views before Solanki during his day-long exercise; said party’s working president in the district Deepak Patnaik.
The aspirants along with their supporters were seen visiting the Congress Bhaban, where they claimed party tickets.
Except Paralakhemundi in Gajapati district, the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) had won in all other 14 seats and two Lok Sabha seats in both the districts in the last general and state assembly elections.
Congress candidate K.Surya Rao had won at Paralakhemundi.
“This time, we are trying to win at least 10 assembly seats and one Lok Sabha seat,” said a party leader.
After Ganjam and Gajapati, Solanki will hold discussions with Congress functionaries at Jeypore in Koraput district for two days from Thursday to shortlist probable candidates from Koraput, Nabarangapur, Malkanagiri and Rayagada, sources said.
