Bargarh, March 15 (LocalWire): While Congress is trying to unite the country, BJP is trying to divide in the name of cast, creed and religion, party president Rahul Gandhi said at an election rally in Bargarh, Odisha on Friday.
“There was a time when Bargarh was called the “Rice Bowl” of Odisha, but now the farmers here are committing suicide,” Gandhi said.
At a “Paribartan Samkalp Samabesh” organised at Bargarh, he also criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik for farm distress and unemployment.
“Naveen Patnaik promised to construct cold storages and provide drinking water to all. But that didn’t happen.
“He also promised to provide 2-lakh employment every year. But that didn’t materialize. Now Odisha is a centre of unemployment,” Gandhi said.
The Congress leader also claimed, “Prime minister talks about farmers in his speech, but he has done nothing for them; rather he waived off 3.5-lakh crore worth of debt of 15-20 billionaires.”
He said that his party has kept its promises to waive off farmers’ debt, good price for their produce and restore land rights for tribals. “It’s being done in letter and spirit.”
He alleged that Modi had tried to stop, or change, the land acquisition bill thrice in parliament.
“Congress will never give false promises like depositing Rs.15 lakh in every bank accounts and jobs to 2 crore youth every year, like Modi did.
“Modi calls himself a chowkidar of the country, but he himself was involved in the biggest corruption till date in Rafale deal.
“Odisha is lagging behind in education and healthcare sectors. Both Naveen Patnaik and Narendra Modi want to privatize them to satisfy their billionaire friends,” he further said.
Rahul also vowed to take strict action in the multi-crore chit-fund and mining scams in Odisha if Congress comes to power.
Speaking at the same venue, Odisha Congress chief Niranjan Patnaik claimed the chief minister haven’t spent a rupee on farmers in the last 18 years of his rule. “Now to woo voters, he is shedding crocodile tears and implementing schemes like Kalia to distribute money.”
Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Waghle, Odisha Congress pravari Jitender Singh, Odisha CLP leader Narasingha Mishra, former ministers Bhakta Das and Jagannath Patnaik. former PCC president Sarat Patnaik, among others attended the programme.
