Bhubaneswar, September 5 (LocalWire): Two policemen and a hardened criminal were injured during a shootout near the comissionerate police and Tangi police station areas in the wee hours today.
The shootout happened when the Nirakarpur and Tangi police special squad were on the chase to nab a history-sheeter Jamshed Khan, who opened fire to avoid arrest and tried to escape.
The cops retaliated with fire and managed to overpower Khan, who was injured during the exchange of fire and has been hospitalised after the arrest. He is stated to be out of danger.
The injured policemen are undergoing treatment at a government-run hospital and are also stated to be out of danger, the police said.
In another shootout in Kalinga Nagar K-7 area on the outskirts of the city, the police resorted to open fire at a wanted criminal Sushant Majhi, who is wanted in a series of criminal cases including an Rs 56-lakh robbery in Tangi police station area.
Majhi shot at the police squad who later opened fire in retaliation, the police said.
A 9 mm unlicensed pistol and five rounds of cartridges were recovered from his Majhi on his arrest.
This is the sixth encounter by the commissionerate police in the recent months after a series of daylight robbery; snatching and loot incidents had rocked the state’s bustling capital city in recent months.
