Kendrapara, Feb 17 (LocalWire): Outbreak of the Coronavirus has taken a toll on Odisha Tourism as many overseas tourists from China and neighbouring countries cancelled their visit.
Buddhist sites of Lalitagiri, Ratnagiri and Udayagiri are known as the Diamond Triangle which attracts tourists from Buddhist dominated countries like China, Thailand, Myanmar and Vietnam have shown a decline in the tourist population.
People from Odisha have also cancelled trips to Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore because of the outbreak.
“We’ve lost a lot of bookings and future overseas guests are in wait-and-see mode. Tourists are having doubts about visiting the state in winter as most of the foreign tourists also visit Thailand, Myanmar, China, Japan and other countries during their tour to Odisha”, said Benjamin Simon the Managing director of Travel Link Private Limited.
Tribal tourism in Koraput, Malkangiri and Gajapati districts have also been affected despite the government efforts to attract overseas tourists.
Ratikanta Patnaik, the tourist officer of tourism department said “ The scar of Coronavirus forced Odisha tourism department to cancel a “Road Show” in Thailand in the month of March to attract more overseas tourists to Odisha”.
Tourism in the Bhitarkanika National Park in Kendrapada, a prime spot for European tourists has also been affected since the virus has been detected in France.
Last year cyclone Fani had severely affected tourism in the state and this year coronavirus has also broken the backbone of the tourism sector, said Sanghamitra Jena of Eastern Treasure India Tours.
