Cuttack, April 5 (LocalWire): A couple were arrested from Bhubaneswar for duping people on social networking site on Thursday evening after a complaint filed by an Odisha Industrial Security Force official.
They allegedly duped more than 15 people of over Rs 50 lakh after befriending them on Facebook. Four mobile phones and three debit cards were seized from Muralidhar Altia and his wife Tanaya Ganga who confessed to the crime during interrogation, police said.
The accused had created multiple fake Facebook profiles with different names and sent friend requests to random people and collected money from them on various pretexts.
The incident came to light when Tanaya under the pseudonym of Subhasmita Mishra collected Rs 70,000 from Madhusudhan Tripathy, a havildar of the OISF, for pursuing MBBS course.
On realising that he has been duped, Tripathy lodged a complaint at the Chauliaganj police station here. Police yesterday raided various places and arrested the duo from Laxmisagar in Bhubaneswar.
