Balasore, September 14: Unable to bear the hunger pang and with no money to sustain a family of eight a couple living near Dargha Maidan area under the Town police station decided to sell their newborn to a childless couple.
The local volunteers, however, have rescued the seven-day-old infant who was sold by his parents Sk Piru and Husunutun Biwi for Rs 20,000. The infant was their sixth child.
While the incident occurred around afternoon yesterday, the child was rescued after interventions of the local community and a group of media persons and the infant returned o her mother by the evening.
This news has rocked the town and the child protection agencies have initiated an inquiry.
“An inquiry would be conducted into the incident,” the district Child Welfare Committee (CWC) chairman Bhagirathi Barik said.
According to Husunutun, the child was sold to Kuttan of Pulbazar for Rs 20,000 as the couple were in distress and did not have enough resource to meet their ends.
The mother also said that she had received Rs 7,000 as an advance two months before her delivery and Kutan paid her another tranche of Rs 13,000 yesterday after she gave away her infant.
“We don’t have enough money to meet both ends. Neither do we have adequate space in the house, nor money for baby foods and medicines.
Considering that the infant would get better upbringing and facilities, I parted with my baby against the will of my husband and other well-wishers. I had no option but to sell,” Hasunutun said.
Her husband, Sk Piru an electrical technician was reportedly not present in the house when the transaction occurred.
“My sister did was childless and we noted that the couple was unable to feed their children. We brought the child today as per our earlier discussion with them and paid a total Rs 20,000,” the brother-in-law of Kuttan stated.
“We had no intention to keep the child permanently.
We had planned to return the child after five years to his mother,” he claimed.
There are allegations that the distressed couple had sold their two other children earlier.
“We will also verify the allegation about the couple selling their two other children during the inquiry and appropriate action would be taken,” Barik said.
