Jajpur, Dec 12 (LocalWire): A court in Jajpur district today set aside the election of a zilla parishad member of Zone 33 under Rasulpur block as she violated the ‘two child norm’ by filing nomination paper during the last gram panchayat election.
Jharana Rout, the BJD candidate had been elected as the zilla parishad member by defeating BJP candidate Jayashree Sahoo and Congress candidate Rita Mishra in 2017.
Both the BJP and Congress candidates strongly opposed Rout filing the nomination paper before the election officer and demanded its rejection as she was mother of three children. But the election officer had rejected their plea and the nomination paper was declared valid.
Both the opposition candidates filed a case in the district court at Jajpur against the elected zilla parishad member and alleged that as per Section 11 of Odisha Gram Panchayat Act a person having more than two children is not entitled to contest in the Panchayat elections.
District judge Biranchi Narayan Mishra, after examining 28 documents including birth certificates of Rout’s children and evidence of three witnesses set aside her election.
