Bhubaneswar, August 23 (LocalWire): The new Commissioner of Cuttack-Bhubaneswar Commissionerate of police, Sudhanshu Sarangi, in an exclusive conversation with LocalWire, elucidated how the police force is trying to make the twin cities a safe place to live in.
‘Our priorities lie from traffic management to crime control.
It will be unjust to single out a priority list.
I will feel proud the day the senior citizens and women walk the streets with no fear or inhibition,’ said Sarangi, widely respected in the police fraternity for his suave and unassuming traits.
‘I am eager to turn the police stations into public relation exercise centres.
We have a bunch of efficient and people-friendly policemen from inspector rank to constables in the commissionerate.
I always stress on politeness and humility as key to effective policing.
Still, some stray complaints of people being ill treated do filter in,’ he said.
‘Unless people in the grass roots repose confidence, it’s not possible to effectively manage the law and order situation.
It’s the people who are the eyes and ears of perfect policing,’ Sarangi said.
‘Policemen are also humans. They do not have magic wands to solve all the problems that go wrong from the law-and-order point of view.
The success of policing system is simple, to walk with the law-abiding people together,’ the 1990-batch IPS officer confided to LocalWire.
‘If police from the top ranks to the bottom become sensitive and public-friendly towards the general public while dealing with their complaints, it will bring about a total change in the system. Currently, we have a perfect and efficient commissionerate police setup. But in every system, there is room and space for improvement.
The commissionerate is also no exception,’ the CP said.
‘I love reading. I find time to read and write despite my hectic schedule. Right from childhood, I derive intrinsic pleasure from reading. It has inculcated humility in me,’ said Sarangi, who confessed to be a bookworm and an avid lover of Odia literature.
‘Professional pressure has affected my literary attributes.
Still I take periodic breaks to carry forward my passion,’ he added.
Sarangi, a trained psychologist, did his post-graduation and PhD in psychology from University of Liverpool, United Kingdom.
An eminent columnist in Odia language, he has five research papers under his belt in eminent academic journals.
Widely regarded for his unassuming and sociable traits, he is the recipient of the President’s police medal, Indian Police Medal, Governor’s police medal for his meritorious service.
He served as superintendent of police in Malkangiri, Sundargarh, Berhampur, Balasore and Keonjhar.
Besides, he was also posted as Inspector General (operation), Chairman, Odisha Police Housing Corporation.
He also served in the cabinet secretariat on deputation to Centre.
