Berhampur, Sept 13 (LocalWire): Continuing the crackdown on illegal sand mining from the river beds, Aska police on Sunday seized seven sand-laden tractors from the Badanadi river bed at Gabanal in Ganjam district.
While all the seven drivers were arrested, the mastermind behind the smuggling managed to escape.
IIC of Aska police station P K Sahoo said, “We were acting on a tip-off, and managed to catch the miscreants red-handed. The vehicles were seized while sand was being loaded.”
The inquiry revealed that the sand quarry was neither leased nor licensed. Search is on for the master-mind who operated the illegal activity, police officials said.
In a similar incident on August 27, the police had seized five tractors who were allegedly lifting sand from the Rushikulya river bed at Cheramania near Aska town.
At least six Andhra Pradesh-bound sand-laden trucks at Aska had been arrested on August 20.
