Berhampur, Dec 25 (LocalWire) A 23-year old anti-social, allegedly involved in at least ten cases in different districts, including Ganjam, was arrested by the police following an exchange of fire at Gudidhepa on wee hours of Tuesday.
Sustaining bullet injuries in right leg, accused Ananta Kumar from Ranapur of Nayagarh district, was admitted at MKCG Medical College and Hospital.
His condition is now stable, medical sources said.
Police seized a motorbike, a country-made pistol, three rounds of live ammunition from the spot, said Chhatrapur Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Ramesh Chandra Sethi.
One of his accomplices, however, managed to escape from the spot, he said.
No police personnel was injured in the exchange of fire, said Khallikote police inspector-in-charge Bibekananda Swain.
Police said Kumar was involved in at least 10 different cases, including attempt to murder, robberies in Ganjam, Khurda and Nayagarh districts.
On December 4, he, along with his associates, had looted a truck loaded with foreign liquor packets from Badaghati, near Khallikote by assaulting the driver of the vehicle. He was the main accused in the case.
“We were tracking his movement for last few days after the incident took place,” said Swain.
Police increased patrolling on National Highway (NH) 16 after knowing about Kumar’s movement in the area.
The accused first fired at the police team and tried to escape from the spot. Police retaliated, as a result he was injured, said Khallikote inspector-in-charge.
Police said they have identified his associate, who accompanied him during the exchange of fire and managed to escape from the spot.
Patrolling has been intensified to nab him, said police.
