Bhubaneswar, Nov 10 (LocalWire): Five districts – Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Balasore and Mayurbhanj have been affected while Jajpur district was partly affected by Cyclone Bulbul that passed along the Odisha coast on Saturday.
The cyclone-induced destruction was not on a large scale as it did not make landfall in the state but the farming sector in these five districts bore the brunt of heavy rainfall and cyclonic storm.
According to preliminary estimates, nearly three lakh hectares of crop including horticulture were affected by the cyclone.
Around two lakh cropland suffered 33% or more damage, said Special Relief Commissioner, Pradeep Kumar Jena.
With government agencies rising to the occasion, the state did not register any loss to human lives although reports of livestock deaths have been registered.
The loss caused to property was minimal with 5,500 kutcha houses being damaged, he said.
Agriculture and revenue department officials are assessing the damage caused by Bulbul.
A clear picture will emerge only after the assessment team submits its report in a week, he said.
The uprooting of poles had led to the disruption of power supply which has been restored to 15 lakh consumers.
Electric connection to the rest will be restored by 12 November.
653 Piped Water Supply (PWS) systems suffered a breakdown in Bhardak, Balasore and Kendrapara districts due to electric disruption.
It has been restored in 174 PWS after electric lines were fixed.
Besides, 45 PWS are operating through generator sets.
Drinking water is being supplied in the affected areas through water tankers.
Remaining PWS are expected to be restored in the next 48 hours.
