Bhubaneswar, May 3 (LocalWire): Cyclone Fani is likely to make landfall near Puri on Friday morning, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said in a latest update.
The storm, barreling at a wind speed of 170-180 kmph, was 275 km away from Puri at 5.30 pm on Thursday, the IMD said.
It is expected to move further north-northeastwards and cross the Odisha Coast after landfall between Gopalpur and Chandbali on Friday.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Thursday night visited the office of the Special Relief Organisation to review its preparedness. He appealed to people to remain indoors till the storm passes.
Commander of Coast Guard (NE region) Rajan Bargotra said all coast guard units in Odisha and West Bengal are prepared to handle any situation arising out of the landfall of cyclone Fani.
He added that disaster relief teams have been formed along Odisha and West Bengal coast to provide relief assistance.
Meanwhile, the Odisha government has suspended all flight operations at Bhubaneswar Airport for 24 hours from midnight in view of the rough weather condition due to the storm.
The Kolkata airport will also remain shut from 9.30 pm on May 3 till 6 pm of May 4.
