Bhubaneswar, May 16 (Local Wire): The Indian Meteorological Department Saturday morning said that a low pressure area in Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm by today evening and also likely to impact Odisha.
The met department said that the well marked low pressure areas over South East Bay of Bengal is concentrated into depression and likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm rapidly by today evening and also expected to turn into severe cyclonic storm during subsequent 24 hours.
The depression is currently 1100 kms south of Paradip in Odisha.
The department has given yellow category warning for north Odisha coasts in the light of the cyclonic storm expectations.
The department also expects light to heavy rainfall along north Odisha coasts.
“Coastal Odisha is likely to experience light to moderate rainfall with heavy falls at isolated places from 18th May evening and heavy to very heavy rainfalls at a few places on 19th May and isolated heavy rainfall over northern Odisha coast on 20th May 2020,” a statement from the department said.
The department also expects winds hitting Odisha coasts on May 19.
The department said, “Squally wind speed reaching 45 to 55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph is likely along and off Odisha coast from 19th morning and along and off West Bengal coast from 19th afternoon.
The wind speed will gradually increase becoming gale wind speed reaching 65 to 75 kmph from 20th morning along and off north Odisha and West Bengal coast.”
